“You’re right. I’m not angry at you. I’m just angry… and hurt.” I take her hand. “Thank you for coming to find me.”

“What a disaster this trip has been for you.”

“I actually said to Kaan and his sister that Istanbul has a vendetta against me,” I groan, trying to lighten the mood. “Honestly, I can’t wait to be back on that plane and back to the safety of London!”

“You might be right there.” That got a half giggle out of Ginny. “And Kaan?”

“I think even you would have to agree that Kaan and I were over before we even really began.”

We take a moment to focus on the stunning view of Istanbul rather than my woes. The lights of the city twinkle below us now, and the cool breeze is refreshing after my climb up that mountain. “Great view, eh?”

“It’s not too shabby.” I smile back at her. “But it was like scaling Mt Everest to get here!”

“Next time take the funicular.”

“Funicu–what?”

“Sure.”

“Are you telling me that I nearly died trying to get up here and I could have caught a train?”

“A funicular—”

“A fecking funicular then!”

Ginny grins mischievously. “Hey, at least you got a workout in.”

“Fuck me!”

“What’s next for you, then?”

“I’m probably going to be fired when I get back. I was supposed to make sure Kaan didn’t do anything wild this weekend. And what do I do? I lose him… in more ways than one. At the very least, I’ll be reassigned, which is pretty much the same thing. If that happens, I haven’t got a clue what I’ll be doing, but I do know it won’t be with him.”

Ginny grabs my hand and squeezes it tightly. “Why not stay here!”

“What? In the city that hates me? What on earth could I do here?”

“Anything you want, you could write your book?”

“I guess.”

“No better place to write than Istanbul, and you’re more than welcome to stay with us.”

“I’m not going to lie, it’s not half tempting. But my life is in London, and I need to get back there and face it.”

“What time’s your flight then?”

“Midnight.”

She puts her arm around my waist as we make our way towards the exit. “One for the road, then?”

“Only one?” I tease. “That’s disappointing.”
