She sang as if she had been doing it all her life and I was surprised that she told me later that night that she used to love singing when she was a little girl. I assumed she was a music fan, but with her choice of job with my company, I wouldn’t have pegged her for a country star type. A country type, yes. But musician? No.

She and Malcolm hit it off pretty quickly, especially once he started getting into our high school days and embarrassing the shit out of me. It was nice to watch her laugh with my best friend, even if he and I don’t talk as often because of how busy his life is right now.

I’m pulled from my thoughts when the knocking gets excessively louder and more frequent. With an irritated sigh, I walk through the living room and swing the door open with an icy glare at the man standing in the hall.

Alex pushes past me, almost as if he’s forgotten how to use his manners, and stands in the middle of my living room with his arms crossed over his chest.

His mouth tips into a smile. “I finally figured it out,” he says.

I cock my head to the side, not sure where he’s going with this. “Kinda confused here.”

He laughs. Not hysterically, but enough for me to think that something is majorly wrong with him and he needs help. “She’s innocent. A virgin. You know that, don’t you?”

Of course, I should’ve known that this would be about Ava. That’s the only person he cares about at this point. Instead of giving in to his antics, I say, “Dude, I hate seeing you like this… You need to get some help. Let me do that for you.”

His glare turns icy, a look in his eyes that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. “I don’t need anyone’s fucking help. What I need is Ava back!”

My fists are clenched at my side while I’m trying really hard not to punch him in the face. If he keeps screaming I’m not going to be able to hold back.

“She doesn’t want you, man!” I yell back. “I’m in love with her, you idiot. Unlike you, I’m going to treat her right.”

He laughs again. “Oh, yeah, I’m sure you will. Then as soon as you get between her legs she will be nothing to you.” His hands are fiddling in his pockets, but the way he’s talking about Ava has everything else blurring around me.

In seconds I’m in his face, my nostrils flaring, while pointing a finger at him. “You’re right. I wanted to make her fall in love with me so that she’d give it up, then I was going to break her heart because of everything she’s done to you. You caught me.”

It takes a moment for my breaths to even out and he’s smiling at me, nodding in approval as if he thinks he actually got it right. Idiot.

“That’s what youwantedto hear from me, right?” I ask, cocking an eyebrow while waiting for his response. His eyes almost fall from their sockets as I get closer to him, leaning until I’m only a couple inches away from him, and say, “You’ve never been more wrong about my intentions. It’s simple, Alex. My intentions with her? I want to love her the way she deserves to be loved, better than you ever loved her, and better than any other man could love her.”

I take a step back, pointing toward the front door with a frown. Ava will be here soon enough and the last thing I want is for her to catch him here. “I love her.Thatis the truth. Not the bullshit you think you know. Now, get the fuck out of our home.”

He stutters, trying to come up with something else to say, but as soon as I reach my hand for my phone to call security he stalks through the door. The last thing I see before the elevators shut is his menacing smile, causing me to go over everything that happened tonight.

It takes a while before my foul mood lifts, but thankfully it's enough time before Ava walks through the doors with a big smile on her face.

Her face is flushed, although she doesn’t seem to stumble, so I don’t think she’s drunk or anything. She walks confidently toward me, her head held high, and a look in her eyes I don’t think I’ve seen on her yet.

Before I can even blink, she’s standing in front of me, staring intently at my lips, then looking back into my piercing gaze. I watch as her throat bobs up and down, her body shaking with need.

“I want you,” she whispers.

My gaze softens, a smile creeping up on my lips, and I cup her cheeks. “You have me, baby.”

She shakes her head, biting her lip nervously. “No. Iwantyou.”

It takes me a couple extra minutes, but I finally understand what she’s saying and back away from her a few steps. “Are you sure about that?” I ask. She needs to be sure, especially if it’s an important step for her.

“I am. Please, take me. All of me,” she says.

I take a deep breath and shake my head, causing her shoulders to deflate and her eyes to water with unshed tears. My hand holds onto her cheek, pressing a soft kiss to it before I hold her for a minute. “It’s not because I don’t want to, it’s because I want you to have the moment you deserve. I want it to be special, that’s all.”

Reluctantly, she agrees to wait and grabs my hand before hauling me into her room with her. Her lips meet mine hungrily and I growl at the sudden contact, gripping her ass with clenched fists to carry her to the bed. It doesn’t take long for her to tire herself out with a make-out session and pass out sprawled along my chest.

She wants me.

I spent the last week making the arrangements for today. My dad approved for both Ava and I to have the day off, giving us a longer weekend, and my hands are sweating with nerves.
