“Who is your boyfriend.”

“Tommy Mayers. He works the cards table.”

My eyes shift to meet Marco’s as his nostrils flair. I move back meet her gaze.

“Very good, what did he get you to do?”

She shakes her head. “He asked me once about Valentina, and who she was dating and then one day I saw the two of you together in the parking lot,” she goes on. “And I casually mentioned it to him, I didn’t think anything of it at the time… until…”

“Until what?” I prompt.

“Until he asked me for my security card to get into the lower floor where I work for Marco.”

My eyes bug wide, and so do Marco’s, but Angelo stays rigid.

I look up at Rocco, still standing there like Georgie might make a run for it at any given moment.

“What for?”

“I’m not exactly sure.”

“And did you?” I go on. “Give him the security card?”

She bows her head. “Once, just to use the bathroom.”

Fuck.

“Was that the only time?”

She nods, then looks to Marco. “I’m sorry, Marco,” she whispers. “I’m sorry I let you down.”

I run a hand over my face as Marco turns and pulls his phone out and makes a call, presumably for someone to go and pick up Tommy.

I give her a reassuring smile and nod to Angelo. We leave the room momentarily.

“She’s telling the truth?” he asks, turning to me.

I nod. “Yes, and I’m not liking where this is going with him having access to Marco’s office. It could explain a lot.”

“Like how they knew you were sleeping with Valentina?” He cocks a brow.

I let that slide as I face him. “I hardly see how that kind of thing is relevant for bribery, Angelo. It’s almost as if…” I trail off, rubbing my jaw.

“Almost as if what?”

“As if someone has given us this ridiculous ruse, one that will never stick or that we will jump to. I mean, think about it. Bribing me with photos of me and Valentina together? They knew that you would be pissed about it, but a million dollars?”

His brow darkens. “You make a valid point.”

“Not to mention that Sloane said the burner phone was paired to Georgie’s mobile phone. Makes you wonder why Tommy would connect to her hotspot when he could have used the hotel’s Wi-Fi and nobody would be any the wiser over who it could be. Why would he need access to Marco’s office, though?”

“It sounds like he’s a fucking associate.” Angelo grimaces at the idea. “If he’s some kind of informant, then he’ll be scrapping for any piece of information he can get to use against us, throwing her under the bus at the same time.”

“Or it’s a deflection.”

“For what?”

“I don’t know, it all just seems a bit… off.”
