I can’t be sure, but it sounds like she’s trying to talk me out of it. “And we love hard too. We’re not all tyrants like Angelo and Marco,” I remind her. “I’m sure Angelo doesn’t control you, nor does he keep you locked in a cage. I’m sure he’d have a tough time doing so.”

She has the good grace to look slightly amused. “Do you get the impression the Michaelson women are hard to control?”

“No, but I know the two of you are headstrong, which is why I think you’re great for Angelo. You’ll keep him level-headed so he doesn’t get too above himself.”

She laughs at that. “I assume we’re speaking off the record?”

“Absolutely. We both know he’d break my face if he heard me talking like this, but I feel I can be honest with you, and I don’t like lying. Maybe it gets me into trouble sometimes, but I’d rather that than be seen as deceitful.”

“So, what exactly are your intentions with my sister?”

I meet her eyes once more. “To take things as slow as she wants, I’m in no hurry. I want her to feel safe with me, not so I can be her everything, but so she knows she has me to lean on when she needs it. I’ve always wanted to settle down. I’m not a player, Rayne. I haven’t been for years and can see a future with her. She’s everything I ever dreamed of, but I don’t think she even knows I’m alive.”

She shakes her head. “That isn’t true. She likes you a lot. But she’s been in a very dark place for quite some time. You have my approval, if that’s what you’re waiting for. Nonetheless, if you do hurt her, remember you’ll have more to worry about than your face being broken.”

My lips twitch. “Coming from the woman sent to kill my brother, I’ll take that as a direct threat.”

She gives me a big grin. “You better believe it.”

She starts to skate away as I call after her. “Are we letting Angelo know?”

She gives me crazy eyes. “Are you nuts?”

I give her a thumbs up. “Loud and clear.”

I don’t like keeping things from my brother, but since I don’t even know what we are yet, it seems premature to bring Angelo into it. I heed Rayne’s words as a warning. The last thing I want to do is hurt anyone, much less Mia, but I must let Angelo know soon.

I know what I want, and what I want is her. Don’t ask me how I’m so sure, and it may sound lame that I feel it in my bones, but I do. I feel it like nothing else I’ve ever felt before.

I glance up, and that’s when my eyes meet hers. She gives me a smile that takes the wind out of my sails. It all makes sense when her eyes are on me.

Everything I’ve ever wanted.

Everything I want to be.

I thought it was my family holding me to the ground, my business, my opulent lifestyle, but it’s not. It’s her holding me there.

I thought that material things made me happy, and maybe they did on the surface, but now I realize that’s all it was. The slow burn between us has escalated beyond epic proportions.

But when she looks at me like that, I do want to give her the world and burn everything else in it, just like I told her sister. I want to be her king.

I beckon her with the crook of my finger as she passes by. She blows me a kiss, and it’s completely adorable. The next time around, she skates over toward me.

“This is amazing, Dante,” she says, her cheeks pink from the cold, but she grips the side of the rink to catch her breath. “Thank you so much.”

She goes to hug me, and I reciprocate. “It was really Rayne’s idea.”

She holds me for a moment too long, my dick springing to life even though there’s a cement barrier between us.

“Don’t let my sister take all the credit. She told me you got us the tickets, the limo, and champagne, and then the beautiful skates you got me.”

“It’s nothing, it was worth it just to see you smile.”

She gives me such a warm smile in return that I want to leap over the barrier and ravage her mouth, taking it and not giving a shit what anyone else thinks.

Darko is on the opposite side of the rink, and if he hasn’t put two and two together by now, I’d be disappointed.

“You’re amazing, Dante. Now I feel bad about being awful to you,” she says.
