I almost spit the water back out. So, this isn’t a joke or a hoax. She does know Rayne.

I know it’s a lie, I heard what the two guards said before; they want us dead.

“W-what does Rayne have to do with all of this?” I ask.

“I understand you have questions, Mia, but none of that is important to me. However, I’m not an unfair or unreasonable person, so I have made a deal with her. All she needs to do is exactly what I say to get to Angelo Medici. It’s that simple.”

“What does she have to do?” I stammer.

“She has to kill him, Mia.”

I gasp, and my hands start to tremble. I wrap my arms around my knees to hold myself. “Kill him? Rayne isn’t a killer. She won’t do that…” I shake my head while trying to digest the words.

She laughs. “Oh, I know that, don’t worry. But once she hears about her baby sister being locked up in this warehouse about to be sold into a sex trafficking ring in the Middle East, I think she might prove to be more accommodating.”

My eyes go wide.

Sex trafficking ring?

Bile rises in my throat. This actually can’t be happening to me.How in the hell am I here?

“I don’t understand any of this,” I whisper, a tremble in my voice. “I want to go home.”

“Well, that’s up to your sister. The quicker she gets the job done, the quicker this will all be over.”

I don’t like her saying, “This will all be over,” instead of, “Let you go.”

This woman is fucking crazy.

“Are you going to hurt me?”

She paces a couple of times, which makes me decidedly nervous. I wish she would just keep still. “For the time being, if Rayne cooperates, I will see to it that you will be safe. Meals will come through the hatch, and you will receive bathroom breaks. I don’t want any trouble, Mia. This is a delicate operation, one that is life and death.” She bends down. “So be a good girl and do what you’re told, then we shouldn’t have any problems.”

For the time being? I don’t even know what that’s supposed to mean.

“And what if Rayne doesn’t do as you say?” I don’t know why I ask that. Do I really want to know?

She continues watching me. I see her silhouette and dark eyes, and the fear of God runs through me. “There is no ‘what if’ Mia. I’ve done my research on your sister, and I know there is nothing she won’t do for you, her little sister. She was easy picking when she acquired the job at Fortress Galleries. Too easy, to be honest. It fell into my lap like it was all meant to be.”

“Kidnapping and keeping me captive is meant to be?” I snark. “Fuck you!”

She chuckles. “You’ll need to keep that fighting spirit. One thing about incarceration is you never know how long you’ll be here.”

I shudder. Feeling the cold creeping in. “Look, if you want money …” I start. Neither of us is well off, but we do have some money between us from our parents' trust fund after they died.

She laughs coldly. “I have all the money I could ever need,” she says angrily. “I don’t want money, possessions, or anything else. What I want is the one thing I can’t have, and that’s Angelo Medici. But that’s all about to change.”

“Why are you doing this? Let me go!”

“You’re not listening, Mia.”

“Fuck you!” I spit.

She laughs. “You’d be best to keep that smart mouth closed, little girl. It’ll only get you into more trouble.” I wince as she stands again, turning her back on me. “Mark my words. If your darling sister doesn’t come through, you’ll have more to worry about than starving to death.”

I become awfully good at pacing over the next few days.
