I remember Dante’s words about me being safe. I guess that is his way of also keeping that promise.

“A freaking car blew up,” I whisper. “I get it, sis.”

“Do you feel more comfortable doing stuff here, in one of the meeting rooms?”

I shake my head. “We both know there's only so much we can do here. We’ll have to go to the gallery at some point soon.”

The grand opening is soon, and there’s still much to do.

“We just have to follow Angelo’s rules,” Rayne says. “I know how that sounds. However, until they get this whole mess sorted out, we must be vigilant and not take too many risks.”

I nod. “Alright.”

She eyes me warily. “So agreeable?”

I shrug. “It’s for the best, as you said.”

“I just really thought all of this was over.”

Darko approaches and motions for us to get into the car as he opens the door. I thank him and scooch over to let Rayne in beside me.

“I did, too,” I say once we’re alone again.

“I know what Angelo’s like,” Rayne says. “He won’t let this go.”

“It’s not like he has a choice. He has to retaliate.”

“Exactly. The last retaliation ended in a bloodbath at Fortress.”

“Nothing is ever dull in this family,” I say.

She turns to look at me. “Okay, out with it.”

I meet her eyes. “Out with what?”

“What happened? You’re acting weird. Is it to do with Dante?”

I want to burst from the rooftops to tell her what we discussed last night and everything else in between. I can’t hold it in any longer.

“It’s everything to do with Dante, if I’m being honest.”

Her eyes almost bug out of her head. “So, did something finally happen?”

I bite my lip, even as the flush on my cheeks says everything. “What do you meanfinally?”

She gives me a look. “I spoke to Dante while you were ice skating. I know how he feels about you.”

“Well, he did say he spoke to you about us quite openly.”

“Well, tell me everything. Was it in New York?”

I nod. “Oh Rayne, he’s just so wonderful!” I gush, knowing I sound like a lovesick puppy. “He’s amazing. I can’t even explain it in words. When I’m with him…everything is better.”

She pinches the bridge of her nose. “I knew this was going to happen.”

“I was going to tell you officially,” I say. “But we wanted to talk to you and Angelo together, soften the blow with you being there.”

She laughs and then glances at me again. “So this is serious. It’s not just…fooling around?”
