I know Dante had a meeting today with his brothers and Enzo, and that Rocco has been confined to his suite after the blast and is being difficult about it. Dante doesn’t say much about what happened though, so I figure something is going on that I’m not to know anything about. And I will ask him, knowing he won’t divulge anything anyway.

“How did things go today?” I say as we ride up in the elevator.

He touches the ends of my hair and reaches down to kiss me softly.

“Things went fine. Vaughn is tracing the surveillance tape from the auction,” he tells me, which essentially gives me nothing.

“Still?”

Dante gives me a look.

“I’m not asking for details. I was asking how it went, if we know anything.”

“That’s the same as asking for details.” He laughs, shaking his head. “I’ll inform you the minute that you need to know, Mia. Nonetheless, there’s no point putting crap in your head as well as mine. It’s better off that way.”

“Are you any closer to finding these guys, tell me that?” I challenge.

He tilts my chin up with his finger and looks into my eyes. “We always get our man, Mia. Always.”

I reach up to kiss him. “I just want you to be careful.”

“Always am. It’s going to be okay, I know it.”

“How do you know?” I ask, my tone softer. I believe it if he says it; his words are always reassuring.

He gives me a sweet expression as if he knows something but doesn’t say anything. He taps me on the nose. “I just know.”

“Very cryptic.” I shake my head. “More to the point, have you figured out what we’re going to say to your brother?”

“I will just tell him the truth,” he says simply.

“This I can’t wait to see.”

“He’s a reasonable man. Once I let him know that we’re doing this, he’ll come around. Rayne’s happy for us. That’ll be in our favor. If he doesn't like it, too bad.”

“You’d go against your brother?” I ask, astonished. I know how close they are.

“If he chooses to make things difficult, I’ll have no choice.”

I reach up and kiss him. “I know you genuinely mean that, though I don’t want to cause a rift.”

“You won’t. As I said, Rayne’s happy, so therefore he should be too.”

“Let’s hope so.”

The elevator stops on their floor. Dante squeezes my hand. “Show time, little bird.”

I don’t know what I expect when I walk into their suite, it’s not like we have to ask permission, but it feels like the right thing to do. Angelo is wearing his usual dark pants and white shirt, his tie hanging loosely around his neck. It’s probably the most unkempt I’ve ever seen him.

He appears a bit weary as he pulls the door back and smiles at us.

“We brought dinner,” I say, holding up the bag of Italian from one of the restaurants downstairs.

“Thank god, I’m starving,” he says, ushering us in.

Rayne is already preparing two large martini glasses of Cosmopolitan, my favorite, when we walk into the large living area. I walk over and give her a hug. She pulls back to look at me and smiles.

“Are you okay?” she asks.
