When she finally looks up, I see so much pain and anguish there. “We never liked him,” she snivels as my dad passes her a tissue. “How could anyone do this to you…”

She cries again, and a lump forms in my throat.

“The doctor said you have some broken ribs and an injury to your eye and your knee is pretty busted,” dad says, his voice hoarse. “And Fynn is out in the hallway… asleep.”

He slept here?

I nod, not wanting to explain that he brought me here, that I called him first.

I already filed a police report; there’s no way my parents would let this go, even if I did agree to let Fynn deal with things.

Dad perches on the end of the bed, his face grave.

“I’m gonna be okay,” I assure them. “You raised a tough cookie. He won’t hurt me anymore.”

“Not if I have anything to do with it,” dad mutters.

The doctor comes in on her rounds and my dad leaves. A few moments later, I hear him talking to Fynn outside, though I can’t hear what they’re saying.

When the doctor leaves, Fynn and my dad return.

Fynn smiles at me. “How are you this morning?”

I force a smile. “I’m okay.”

He frowns.

Guilt swallows me whole because I involved him in this, and then I asked him not to kill Cam.

I know I’ve got a lot of work to do, and counseling might help.

“I want to go home,” I add.

“When will they discharge you?” Fynn asks, folding his arms over his chest.

“Tomorrow, I think.” They were keeping me in overnight, but the doc wants to monitor me for another twenty-four hours.

I fall in and out of sleep as the day goes on. Day turns to night, and the next day, I’m free to leave.

I’ve got no permanent damage to my face or nose, so they just need to heal. I do have a torn ligament in my knee, though, making it almost impossible to walk, and two cracked ribs.

It's the two black eyes, as well as the swelling covering one half of my face, that has me really worried.

Every time Fynn looks at me, I see what he sees through his eyes, and I want to cry all over again.

“I’m going to ride with Fynn, if that’s okay?” I say to my parents when we leave.

They stayed late until my brother Ray arrived, until visiting hours were over.

“Sure, honey, we’ll see you at home.” Dad gives me a hug and nods toward Fynn, giving him a pat on the back. “Thank you, son, for getting to her so fast.”

Mom is still sniffling into her handkerchief. I know this is especially hard for her.

I’m her little girl, and they have only ever wanted what’s best for me. They had no idea what Cam had put me through because I covered it up so well.

At least I’m free of him now, and he can’t hurt me anymore. I don’t ever have to see him again.

I give Mom a long hug, and they take my stuff with them. Fynn said he’d get all of my belongings from the townhouse we’re renting. I never have to see that place again.
