We linger outside Fynn’s car.

“Are you going to say anything?” I prompt, after a long silence.

Fynn looks up to the sky and sighs heavily, before looking at me with his baby blues.

He’s always had the most beautiful eyes. Right now, he’s battling with whatever’s going on in that pretty head of his.

“I don’t know what to say,” he tells me, shrugging. “I can’t stop thinking about how I found you, in the basement.”

I wrap my arms around myself.

“I’m glad you came,” I whisper.

He places a hand on the small of my back, resting lightly. “Let’s get going,” he says, walking around to the passenger side, opening the door for me. He helps me as I tentatively lower myself in, wincing as my ribs hurt like a bitch. My face feels bloated and horrible. I don’t even want to look at myself in the mirror.

“Fynn?” I ask when he slides into the driver's seat.

“Yes, baby cakes.”

I smile. “Did you find Cam yet?”

He pauses, his face grave. “No, I’ve not seen him.” He starts up the engine, but doesn’t look at me. “I was waiting here, just in case he showed up.”

I blink, and my eyes widen. “You stayed at the hospital all night?”

“I was worried about you.”

My heart swells. This is Fynn, this is exactly who he is.

Handsome. Protective. The whole package. A total badass Medici.

I try to gauge whether he’s telling the truth, but we both know he can’t lie. Not to me.

“What did Angelo say?” I ask, as he maneuvers his way out of the hospital parking lot.

“He wasn’t happy about the situation. None of us are. Your parents are freaking the fuck out.”

“I know. I hate doing this to them.”

He glances at me sharply. “How many times do I have to tell you, youdidn’t do anything wrong. You didn’t do anything to anyone. It’s that asshole that did this. If he’s still breathing, then he better get used to living on the run.”

I blink rapidly and look out the window. Everything he’s saying is true, I just don’t want my parents to worry. I will get through this. I have love and support all around me.

“Can we go to Mo’s before we go home?” I ask him after several moments of silence ensue.

He glances over at me again. “You want hot dogs, baby cakes?”

I smile, but it hurts my face. “Yes, and a chocolate shake with all the toppings, just likeold times.”

Mo’s is our old hangout, and I haven’t been there in forever. Every Friday night, we’d have a hot dog, Eskimo pie, and a chocolate shake. It was a ritual. How I miss those days now. It seems so far away.

“I haven’t been there for ages.” He chuckles.

It’s the first time I’ve heard him sound carefree since he picked me up. I’m glad to see a little of his old self. It’s not like Fynn to be frowning and angry.

“Me too. But can we get takeout, and go down to the Charles?”

“Why’s that, you wanna make sure Cameron isn’t floating down in there?”
