“I don’t know,” Angelo says. “If we go down there, now, we’re all dead.”

“But Sage!”

“She’s just another pawn, brother, another breadcrumb in a trail of many. If he wanted Sage dead, he would’ve killed her by now. She’s leverage, and he knows we will do anything to get it back.”

I like the way he sayswe. I know he’d never want anything bad to happen to Sage, but it isn’t the love of his life down there with Roberto. It’s mine.

Sage ismine.

I need to get to her.

My heart constricts. I try once more to push past Rocco and Darko, but I’m not as solid as they are.

I might be a good fighter, but I’m no match for the two of them together.

“Please!”I beg him, even though it pains me to do so.

Angelo nods to Rocco. “What did you do with the car? “

“Taking it to secure location.”

Angelo gives him a look of approval. “Very good. What Roberto wants is a show, so what we have to do is give him one, or at least make him think that’s what he’s getting. If he is the one behind all of this, if he is Il Diavolo, he is more dangerous than I first anticipated.”

“I just don’t understand, “I whisper, shaking my head.

“I don’t either,” Angelo mutters, his face looking stoic. “But I do know we have to stick together. Trust me on this, I know how he works.”

“Maybe you don’t. Maybe none of us ever knew him. If he’s the one behind all of this, then his hatred for all of us, it runs deeper than anything I’ve ever seen.”

“What do you want us to do?”

“I want you to get everyone together.”

Rocco queries. “Everyone?”

Angelo’s eyes meet his. “Everyone.”

Rocco nods. “On it.”

“If Roberto wants a war, then a war is exactly what he’s going to get.” Angelo adjusts his tie, like it’s just another day in the office. Like his older cousin, and once best friend, isn’t affecting him in the slightest, even though I know that it is.

I’ve run back into Sloane’s office, and she is still clicking around on the computer.

“Show me the parking lot.”

She does as I say. “Okay, just a moment.”

I don’t see Sage on the screen because it’s completely covered with smoke.

Holy fucking shit. He did it.

I watch in horror.

I see the lights of the vehicle reversing, and the car takes off. Turning back toward the door, I run back into the hallway.

“They’re leaving!” I snarl. “He just gassed the parking garage… fuck!”

“I already have men on the trail,” Rocco says, stepping back into the conversation after using his phone. “We need to move.”
