She’s quiet, and I wish I knew what she was thinking.

“Sage?”

She doesn’t look at me.

I lift her chin with my thumb. I wish she wouldn’t cry. I can’t handle it when something makes her sad or that I had a hand in it.

“Did you kill him this time?” she asks, her voice barely audible. I know this stirs a lot of memories up again, and I hate myself for that.

“Yes.”

She nods. “Good.”

I run a hand through my hair as she turns away. “I’m just sorry I didn’t do the job properly the first time.” I watch her as she looks out the window, her mind a million miles away. Seeing her distress firsthand, I add, “I should get you home.”

I start the car, and we sit in silence as I pull back onto the road.

I killed him.

“I can’t believe he was involved in the kidnappings,” she says after a while. It also came to light Cam and Allegra were in cahoots with a member of the Bratva, Vlad. They were all involved in the kidnapping and containment of both Mia and Katiya. Vlad was later taken care of by Aleksi Petrov, Katiya’s uncle.

Aleksi technically is our enemy, but we’ve come to a tentative truce since Katiya became involved with Marco. He stays at one end of Massachusetts, and we rule the other.

I sigh. “He was a mule, nobody important.”

“But he was involved with the kidnappings.”

“To some degree, yes.”

She shakes her head, sinking back into the chair, and I dial up the heat as she shivers.

“I don’t want you to worry about it,” I tell her matter-of-factly. “It’s done now.”

Please don’t ask me how I did it.

She turns away, lost in thought.

“Did you eat?” I ask her.

She shakes her head. “I’m not hungry.”

“Not even a quickie burger?” I try to make things a little less grim.

“Not tonight, thank you.”

We both know Quickie Burgers make everything better, but she’s right, not tonight.

I pull up to her townhouse five minutes later and walk her to the door.

I can’t get it out of my head the huge secret she kept from me about what Cameron did. I know I have to address it. She’s kept it from me for ten years.

I have to put myself in her shoes to how she felt. She was the one who suffered the brutality in all of this… But if I’d truly known what happened that night, he would have been six feet under from the get-go.

“It’s been a big night,” she says, reaching in her bag for her keys.

“Are you okay?” I ask.

She bites her lip and looks up at me. “Yes.”
