I know she’s not.

I take a deep breath. “Why didn’t you tell me… about what he did to you?”

She frowns. Recognition flashing through her pretty eyes. She tries to look away, but I hold her chin so she can’t. She doesn’t try to stop me.

“What are you talking about?”

“You know what I’m talking about.”

She shrugs. “I just wanted to keep that part to myself. It was embarrassing enough.”

“Embarrassing.” I flinch like she’s struck me. My anger boiling.

Does she not trust me at all?

“It was bad enough that you saw me beat up, without having to hear any of the gory details.”

“And even after that, you wanted me to show him mercy?” I laugh without humor.

It messes with my head.

I was supposed to protect her.

I pull her into my arms, and she falls freely, sobbing into my shoulder.

“I’m so sorry, Fynn,” she cries. “I just didn’t know what to do…”

“Do your parents know?”

“That he raped me? No.” She shakes her head. “I kept everything quiet, other than at the hospital with my doctor, and eventually with Josie…”

She places her cheek back on my chest and I hold her until she calms.

“I don’t like that there was a secret between us.”

“Fynn, you have to understand that I was in shock. So much happened that night…”

I don’t want to bring up the past, I don’t want to make her sad.

“I know, I just… I want you to know that you can always be honest with me. You can tell me anything. As much as we fight, and joke, and I act like a dick most of the time, I’m here for you…”

She rewards me with a small smile. “You’re only a dick half the time.”

“That’s a relief.”

I should be mad at her and question her why she felt the need to withhold information like that from me. But the reasonable part of my brain tells me it’s water under the bridge now. I don’t want to keep hurting her by bringing this all back up again. And I’m nothing like my brothers, Dante excluded, who can be cold-hearted bastards at times.

She surprises me by saying, “At least now he won’t ever be able to hurt anyone else.”

I cup her face. I know it’s intimate, but she doesn’t blanch or pull away. “Nobody will ever hurt you again, Sage, you have my word on it.”

She frowns slightly.

“What?” I prompt.

“Did you have people follow me, when I was in Cali?”

I swallow hard.
