There’s no point giving a shit when you’re dead.

I race up the hallway to her office. I don’t even knock. I barrel through the door as she looks up from her desk, two police officers standing around, asking her questions.

“Sage.” I rush to her. “Are you okay?”

She smiles, but she looks tired. That overprotective urge comes over me once more. The one that doesn't want to let her out of my sight.

“I’m fine,” she says when I reach her. “The officers were just getting a statement.”

I turn to look at them.

“I’m Fynn Medici,” I say, as both of them look at one another. “You can direct all your inquiries to me or to Angelo.”

One of the officers looks confused. “Why would we do that?”

“Because one of our bodyguards killed the assailant in self-defense, and he won’t be talking until our lawyer arrives.”

One of the officers rolls his eyes. I look at him sharply. “Or I could just get Angelo down here himself…”

The older one of the two shakes his head. “That won’t be necessary, Mr. Medici.”

“Where is Garrett?”

Sage’s eyes meet mine. “He’s being treated, then he’ll be questioned.”

He never mentioned the part where he got hurt. I’m not worried about him; I know he’s okay.

I turn my back on the cops as they go to leave, and I cup Sage’s face.

“You’re coming with me to the casino.”

“But I’ll need my things.”

“I’ll buy you whatever you need.”

She sighs, like the weight of the world is on her shoulders.

“What the fuck happened?”

She shakes her head. “It happens from time to time, Fynn. Sometimes there isn't enough security or police down here. It’s been a problem for a long time.”

“Why didn’t you say something sooner? I could have talked to Angelo, the mayor…”

“Or one of the many politicians in Angelo’s pocket?”

“Does it matter, as long as you’re safe?”

She looks so pale and frightened that I want to scoop her up in my arms and never let her go. This guy must have really scared her, because Sage is a pretty tough cookie.

“He got close, Fynn, really goddamn close.”

I pull her to me as I fold her into my arms and kiss the top of her head. “If anything ever happened to you…”

I noticed she’s got a bandage wrapped around her arm, I’m guessing from where he cut her.

He’s fucking lucky he’s already dead.

“Jesus Christ,” I mutter, pulling her even closer. “Sage, I’m telling you now that you’re putting in for a vacation, and I don’t want to hear any buts, got me?”
