She nods against my chest. “I think I need a couple of days off.”

I pull back to look down at her. “I hate that this happened.”

“It’s my job,” she whispers. “You can’t be around all the time to save me.”

I give her a look. “That’s what you think.”

She shakes her head. “I feel bad for Garrett… he killed a man.”

I don’t tell her she shouldn’t feel sorry for Garrett. He loves his job, about as much as Rocco and Darko. With any luck, he used excessive force and the guy died painfully. Images of him being strung up for me to deal with run through my head, but I don't have that luxury now.

And anyway, I need to take care of Sage.

“Don’t. He got what he deserved. Let’s go. If you really want to stop by your place, then I will, but we have everything at the casino.”

Sage has never been a high-maintenance kind of girl, so she nods, her eyes looking very far away.

“Maybe we can stop by tomorrow,” she concedes. “I’m just so tired, Fynn. I need to rest.”

I nod, rubbing her shoulders. “I’ll take care of you.”

We leave, and she slumps against me, exhausted as we walk to my car.

That protective urge hits me right in the guts.

He could’ve seriously hurt her.

He could’ve killed her.

A shudder runs through me.

I open the passenger door and help her inside.

“Thank you, Fynn.”

I nod. Closing the door as I scoot around the front to the driver's seat.

It’s starting to drop in temperature, so I shrug off my jacket and lay it over her lap, then I turn on the heater. She glances at me gratefully.

I take the road back without as much urgency, now that I have her safely in the car.

“Are you feeling okay?”

“Fynn, I’m fine. I had a scare, that’s it. You’re really sweet, but I’m not going to break.”

“But you’re hurt.”

“I’ll live.”

I weave through the traffic, wanting to be there already so I can run her a bath and feed her.

“I’m glad Garrett got to him before me,” I say, grinding my teeth. “Because I’d hunt him down to the ends of the earth.”

She rests her hand on my arm. “Don’t fuss. It was scary, but I lived. I’m fine. Garrett’s fine, and nobody else got hurt.”

I swing into the underground parking, scanning my thumb print and entering the code and park in my usual spot.

“Fynn?”
