“Everyone go and pack,” Rome orders immediately, although it’s unnecessary since they are all instantly following me up the stairs.

Just as I open my mouth to thank them, Waverly picks up, and my focus immediately goes to her.

“Shit, Waves I’m sorry I missed your calls. What’s going on?” I ask urgently.

“It’s Micha, he’s been hurt really badly, and he’s in hospital. The kids have gone to stay with their grandmother for a few days. Jynx, someone did this to him, and I don’t know why. I’m worried about the kids, which is why I’ve sent them away, but I’m worried that whoever did this to Micha is going to come back and finish the job. I can’t ask him what happened because he’s in a medically induced coma,” she finishes on a hiccup sob.

“I will be there as soon as I can. We will get to the bottom of this and make sure that Micha, the kids, and you are all safe.” I reassure her and then add when an idea occurs to me, “I’m bringing some Ravens that I trust to keep an eye on Micha’s room.”

“Thank you, Jynx, it’s so bad. You should’ve seen him.” She sniffs again, and I know for a fact that she hates that she’s crying right now despite the fact that it’s more than understandable.

“We’ll sort it, Waves, and we will deal with whoever did this. Is Maria at home?”

“No, Mom is on some kind of job with Alaric, your uncle, and Ryan.” She replies, already sounding more put together.

“They’ve been doing a lot together recently, haven’t they?” I ask, hoping to distract her.

Her voice comes out stronger, “Oh, they really have.”

“It’s about damn time,” I reply and then add, as I pull out a bag and start stuffing it with clothes and weapons, “I will be there as soon as I can. I’ve just got to call the airport, get the Raven team in, and then we will be there.”

“Love you,” is her simple reply as I say it back, and then she hangs up.

Still stuffing things in my bag and trying to make sure that I remember to pack essential things like guns and underwear, I dial the airline quickly and hope, like hell, that they are going to be able to fly us out to New Orleans. The phone call is very brief, and thankfully, they can fly us out in two hours, which gives me just enough time to contact the Conspiracy team and then get us all to the plane. I also double-checked on the phone that my favourite steward was going to be on board, and they said they’d see what they could do.

“What’s going on?” Rome asks, and I jump slightly because I hadn’t heard him come up the stairs to my room.

Turning around, I find them all standing at the top of my stairs, watching me closely and seriously. You know, it’s in that moment with them all so ready to jump into the fire with me, without knowing what’s going on that I realise that I love them. I don’t have time to deal with that incredibly monumental thought right now though, so I push it away and fill them in on what’s going on.

Once I’m done explaining, I add, “We don’t actually have much information right now, and we’re going to be on a time crunch in order to get it sorted and get back for the meeting on Friday.”

“We’ll get it sorted, and if not then we can work something out. Waverly and Micha are your family, and there’s no way that we’re going to leave them in danger.” Mase replies firmly, the others all nodding in agreement.

“Thanks guys,” I reply, incredibly grateful for them.

“What do you need us to do?” Rip asks, his eyes watching me closely.

“Could you guys please load up the car with our bags while I call the Conspiracy team and see if they’re available to come with us and keep watch over Micha while we find out what happened,” I reply, trying to make sure that I’m covering everything and there isn’t anything important that I’m forgetting.

“We’re on it,” Mal replies and pulls me into his arms, kissing me thoroughly before he heads down the stairs.

One by one they all kiss me, leaving me breathless and needing a moment before I make the phone call to Sawyer and then the Conspiracy team, that’s assuming they aren’t together already.

“I’m just going to go and find Gerald quickly. He’s going to need to watch the dogs for me and feed Murphy while we’re gone,” I call over my shoulder as I jog ahead.

“Don’t take too long man, Jynx is worrying and I don’t like that it’s some unknown enemy, especially one that could get the jump on Micha. We all know he’s not exactly easy to take down,” Rome calls after me.

I raise my hand in the air to show that I’ve heard him but carry on jogging down the hallway and then the stairs. I’m really hoping that he’s in his office because otherwise, I have absolutely no idea where he could be, and it will most likely put us behind. I don’t want there to be any delays. We can’t afford for there to be any.

Getting to the door to his office, I hear his muffled voice like he’s on the phone with someone, and because I’m usually a nosey bastard, I would pause to listen, however I can’t right now, so instead of lingering as I’d really like to I raise my fist to knock on the door. The conversation on the other side immediately stops, and as I wait for him to call me in, I hear the whispered parting words that make me exceptionally curious.

“It’s not going to be difficult. They’re good at what they do,” he falls silent as he listens to the reply, and then I can’t hear anything else.

I have a feeling that he was talking about us, but I have no idea what he was referring to or who he was talking to, and although it makes me suspicious, I do trust Gerald, and I know that he wouldn’t ever do anything that would put Jynx in danger, it’s evident that he had a close relationship with Jynx’s grandmother and no doubt feels a connection with Jynx for that reason as well.

The door opening pulls me out of my musing thoughts and back to the issue at hand.
