“Ace, is everything okay?” Gerald asks, concern flashing through his steely blue eyes for a second.

I nod, and give him what I hope is a reassuring smile as I reply, “Jynx got a call from Waverly and she needs our help so we’ve got to take off, I’m not going to be able to take the dogs with me and was just wondering if you would mind looking after them and Murphy?”

Gerald smiles, and looking at him now you’d struggle to believe that he can kick ass and take names as well as he can. “Yes, of course, I’ll just need a list of any of their commands, and how much and often you’re feeding them, that sort of thing.”

My smile is relieved as I pull a folded piece of paper out of my pocket and hand it to him, “I was hoping you were going to say that I came prepared.”

“Thank you, I’ll see that they are well taken care of,” he replies and then adds, “If you need any assistance while you’re away, please give me a call, and I will see what I can do to help.”

I nod, “Thanks man, I’ll let Jynx know.”

Turning on my heel, I rush back down the corridor, not wanting to make them wait for me; I have already said goodbye to the dogs, and Murphy, who, as soon as I said I was leaving, hissed at me and turned his back, ignoring me for the rest of the time I was packing. He then darted in front of me as I was walking out of the door and sent me flying—damn sassy cat.

“Was Gerald okay with looking after the animals?” Jynx asks as soon as I exit the hallway that leads to Gerald’s office.

I nod, “Yeah, he was fine with it.”

“Great, let’s get going then,” Rome suggests and we all head out to the car.

Once we’re seated and on the way, I ask, “What happened with the Conspiracy team? Are they coming?”

“Yeah, they’re going to meet us at the airport and we’ll try to work out the logistics when we’re on the plane,” she replies thoughtfully, her mind clearly going a mile a minute.

It takes us no time at all to get to the airport, and we meet the Conspiracy team that now officially includes Sawyer and Dax.

“I cannot believe that you’ve got your own plane,” Harley exclaims as we walk across the tarmac to the plane. The airport is so small that we can walk directly from the parking lot and through a single checkpoint in the fence, and then straight onto the tarmac.

Jynx grins, “I still can’t believe it; if I’m honest, it wasn’t that long ago that I was living in a single wide and wondering where the hell I was going to get my next meal from.”

Harley seems to look at her in a new light then, and she replies, “Tell me about it.”

“I promise that from now on you will all be paid fairly,” Jynx replies, that fire that I love flashing through her eyes.

Asher’s smile is wide, “We know. You haven’t given us a reason to doubt you yet.”

“We’re quite happy to follow your lead; otherwise we wouldn’t be here with absolutely no other information apart from the fact that you needed us,” Lorcan points out.

I think after everything has calmed down a bit and we’re not juggling several significant events at the same time, I’m going to suggest that we get together just to hang out and get to know each other a bit more. We’ve done quite a lot of work with them by this point and, of course by default, have been able to get to know them, but not as much as I’d like. I don’t think it would take much convincing to get Jynx to agree with me.

My eyebrows raise slightly as a good-looking guy dressed in a uniform starts waving enthusiastically at Jynx, and she smiles.

“Hey, Carter,” she greets him, and I remember that she mentioned him before. I also remember that he was the one that stopped us from following her when we realised just how badly we fucked up. Not that I ever wanted to go along with Rome and Rip’s plan, and neither did Mase or Mal; however we all agreed that we wanted her safe, and she was so meek and gentle, or at least we thought she was, that it seemed like the only way to ensure that she was safe. I have never been so fucking happy that we were wrong.

Noticing the death glare that Rip is giving Carter, I smack him on the chest and keep my voice low so Jynx doesn’t hear while she’s doing the introductions for the Conspiracy team.

“Dude, reel it in,” I mutter and get his piercing glare turned to me; rolling my eyes, I add, “he protected her from people he thought were threatening her. Do you really want to have a problem with him for that?”

Mase clears his throat, standing on the other side of Rip, and adds, “And if you did still want to, Jynx clearly likes him. Are you willing to go up against her because we all know what she’s capable of?”

I burst out laughing when Rip’s scowl immediately disappears, and he shakes his head, “Oh fuck no, I’m not risking pissing Jynx off; that’s just not worth it.”

“Thought so,” Mase smirks, and Rip simply flips him off.

“What are you three giggling about?” Jynx asks us, raising her eyebrow.

Rip frowns and, sounding more offended than he should be, replies, “I do not giggle.”

She tries to suppress her smile as she replies, “Sure, you don’t.”
