“Oh, literally spitting mad,” Rip replies with a chuckle.

“He’s going to be tripping Ace up constantly,” Mal adds.

I burst out laughing, “And completely ignoring him the rest of the time.”

“Or it could go the other way, and he could just yell at Ace continuously for a while until Ace fully regrets his decision to leave Murph with Sawyer,” Rome suggests.

“Yeah, that sounds more like it,” I agree.

“Even if he has a great time with Sawyer, he’s still going to be mad as hell with Ace,” Rip adds.

It’s at that point that Ace steps out of the closest cabin and jogs toward the car, pulling open the door and sitting next to me.

“Fucking hell, Murphy is never going to forgive me for this,” he says as soon as he’s sitting down, and we all immediately burst out laughing. He looks around at us, confused, and asks, “What?”

“We were just saying that Murph was going to cause you hell when we get back,” I explain to him.

“Oh yeah, there’s no doubt about that,” Ace agrees, wincing and making us laugh again as we pull out of the Conspiracy’s drive, and I send a quick text to Sawyer to say thank you again for having them.

“Those of you that can should get some sleep. We’ve got a long drive ahead of us, and chances are we aren’t going to be able to get some sleep as soon as we get there, and we need to be on top form when we do arrive,” Rome suggests to the rest of us.

“Fine, but wake me when we’re halfway there, and we’ll swap so that you get a good amount of sleep as well,” Rip orders Rome for a change, and Rome easily agrees.

“Fine,” he replies and then reaches over and turns the music up slightly to drown out the sounds of the car.

“Should we eat first?” I suggest, mostly because I’m hungry.

I see Rome’s lips tilt up in the mirror, “If you’re hungry, you can eat now.”

“Yes!” Ace exclaims, clearly just as hungry as I am.

It turns out that, actually, everyone is hungry, so we end up eating all of the sandwiches only about twenty minutes into the drive. We’re most likely going to have to stop for food at some point, this is a long drive, and Ace can’t seem to go longer than thirty minutes without eating. Surprisingly, I manage to fall asleep quite quickly; considering it’s late afternoon, I must have been far more tired than I thought.

“Guys,” Rip’s voice starts to drag me from my sleep, “we’re about ten minutes away, and everyone needs to be awake before we head over the town limits.”

I’m instantly awake and stretching. We only stopped once for snacks so that everyone could use the bathroom and so that Rip and Rome could switch drivers. Rome got away with driving for more than halfway before Rip woke up and insisted that they switch, so thankfully, the last bathroom stop wasn’t that long ago, and I’m not worrying about fighting while needing to pee, which was a fear of mine, I’ll admit.

“Does everyone remember what the plan is?” Rome checks yet again.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to get up to my family house without incident, but if something goes wrong and we’re spotted before we get there, the aim is to still try to get to the house because once we’re there, assuming that my parents are actually dead, then we will be safe,” Ace repeats what we’ve discussed before.

“And if we can’t get to the house and we end up being ambushed or something, then we fight, take down every fucker we can, while still getting to the house,” I add with a smile.

“Good,” Rome says, tension running through him, anticipation too.

As we go past the town sign, that anticipation spreads to the others, and I lean forward slightly, trying to see as much as I can even though it’s the middle of the night and the town doesn’t seem to be that big a fan of streetlights so I can’t see much.

“Huh,” I say with a slight frown.

“Not what you expected?” Rip asks with a knowing smile.

I shake my head, “Nope, to be honest, I don’t know what I expected, but it’s not this. I mean, I can’t see much, and I know we saw it on the cameras, but it's all so normal. Cute even.”

“Yeah, our families look after the town, or at least they’re supposed to,” Rome replies, “I seem to remember it being in better condition when the grandparents were alive. The people were also happier. I don’t know how, and maybe I was looking at it through the eyes of a child, but I just remember it being better.”

“I do as well,” Mason agrees.
