“Great,” Ace smiles, looking relieved.

“We need to pack weapons and anything we may need. We’re going to take one car so we can’t be separated and picked off, and when we get to Ace’s, assuming that it's clear, we’re going to hunker down there while we try to figure out what’s going on and if any of Ace’s staff are still at the house, hopefully, we can get some information from them, and then we’ll go from there.” Rome explains.

“We need to remain on our guard the entire time,” Mason warns us, all looking around at us with concern.

“Of course,” Malachi replies.

“I’m going to raid my grandmother's weapons and get some of her poisons from the office just in case we need them. Plus I’m going to my family's estate. I think it’s fitting that I arrived armed with poisons, which if Mason is correct, was their specialty.” I grin as I turn on my heel and head toward the library and my grandmother's office.

“Wait up,” Ace calls after me, “she’s got some wicked fucking weapons in there. I want some as well.”

“Of course come on, we need to be quick,” I reply and we share an excited smile.

We probably shouldn’t be this excited to head into imminent danger, but we are, and we aren’t ever going to be normal. It’s better than being scared witless and not actually being able to go there in the first place, which would mean we got no answers whatsoever.

Ace and I take longer than we probably should to choose our weapons, but there are so many to choose from that no one would really be able to blame us. He ends up leaving me to it to get the dogs and Murphy ready when I take even longer trying to choose which poisons to bring with me, it seems like a significant choice, and I don’t want to choose the wrong ones. Once I have decided, I put them all in this little carry case that has individual slots for each poison and should hopefully stop them from breaking. Nobody wants that to happen.

Leaving and locking my grandmother's office behind me I head toward the front door and put my bag of weapons and poisons next to it before I take the stairs two at a time and head up to my room to pack and get some more of my favourite weapons. Once in my room, I only have to pack a few things in the bag because I always have a bag packed and ready to go for these situations, it’s something that D always taught me, and the only reason why I had to pack when we went to help Waverly was because I was so worried about Micha I forgot that I’d repacked it and it was ready to go.

Thankfully that means that it’s ready to go now. All I have to do is add the weapons that I want to take and a few more clothes since I usually only pack for a couple of days and I’m reasonably confident that we are going to be there for longer than that.

When I get back downstairs, I dump my bag with the others by the door, the guys having finished packing too, and follow the sounds of their voices to the kitchen.

“All packed?” Rome asks me, and when I nod, he adds, “we’re just making some sandwiches and grabbing some food for the drive. We want to stop as few times as possible.”

“Plus, he really wanted sandwiches,” Mal adds with a chuckle.

“Fair enough. Anything I can do?” I ask.

“Nope, this is the last one.” Rip replies, as he puts it in a Tupperware box that he’s managed to find somewhere.

“Great. Sawyer sent me the address to their place while I was packing. It’s right on the edge of town, the opposite direction to Mona’s,” I explain as I follow them out of the kitchen.

“That’s okay, we actually need to head in that direction anyway,” Rome replies as he picks up some of the bags.

When we get outside I ask, “I thought we were only taking one car?”

“We are,” Ace replies, “but the dogs won’t fit in the SUV with all of us and the bags, so we’re going to take two to Sawyer’s place and then leave one there before we carry on to our hometown in the SUV.”

“Oh, okay, that makes more sense. From the way Sawyer was describing it, they have plenty of space, so we should be able to leave it there with no problem.” I reply.

“Let’s go,” Rome orders, and it’s clear that he wants to get to the town as quickly as possible so that we know for sure what we’re dealing with.

We all pile in the SUV leaving Ace to ride in the truck with the dogs and a very grumpy-sounding Murphy, who has not stopped yelling at Ace from his cat carrier since Ace brought him down.

Chapter Twenty-Two

The drive to the Conspiracy’s place isn’t too far away from ours, and we get there reasonably quickly, which is good since we want to get to the town while it’s dark but not close to it being morning.

“Wow, this place is fucking huge,” Rip exclaims as we pull through some gates and down a dirt track.

There’s a U-shaped driveway with a big cabin at the top of the U, and then several other cabins on either side of it spread out reasonably evenly and giving them all space and their own plot. It’s kind of like living on a family estate, I guess and it’s a really cool idea. Everything looks relatively newly built, so I’m guessing that Fox inherited it reasonably recently.

Ace suddenly appears at Rome’s door, and Rome winds down the window, “You guys stay here, it shouldn’t take me too long to get them settled, and then we can head off.”

“Alright, dude, don’t forget to ask if it's okay to leave the truck here,” he reminds Ace, and Ace nods before whistling for the dogs and striding off.

“How mad do you think Murphy is going to be?” Mason muses from where he’s sitting in the very back of the SUV with Mal.
