She came. She really came. I didn’t ask her. I hadn’t even spoken to her all week.

But she was there, in the stands, watching. Supporting. Cheering.

For me.

My heart swelled so much, I thought it would burst out of my chest. All I wanted to do was rush over to her and wrap her up in my arms.

However, I had a game to finish. Coach Andersen called me over, wanting to give me another chance.

The second I pointed out Una in the crowd, he knew. He knew, just like I knew.

The game was on. And I was on fire.

As soon as I ran onto that field again, no one could stop me. I wasn’t there to only play.

I was there to win.

Nothing was going to stop me from showing off and impressing that girl in the stands. Thankfully, my teammates must have seen the change and taken notes, because they sent the ball my way every chance they could.

It wasn’t easy to come back from a one nothing loss. Within five minutes of seeing Una, we scored. We pushed it into overtime and every member of the team was spent.

Then, I got the ball. The defenders were still behind me. I sprinted my heart out down the field, the roar of the crowd in surround sound.

Right before I got close enough for the goal, I turned and snuck a glance at the one person I wanted to see.

She looked equal parts terrified and hopeful, her hands clutched together in front of her chest.

I looked up at the scoreboard, her words still there. It was insane that she even go them there. Her connections ran deeper than I realized, but I read them again.

Every happily ever after ends with onething…

I kicked.

The ball went soaring.

It sailed over the goalie’s head and into the net. The sound from the bleachers was deafening. My teammates caught up, jumping on top of me, slapping my back, and shouting equally as loud as the crowd.

We had a few more minutes left to play, but we managed to hold the other team back.

As soon as the ref whistled to end the game, I took off. I didn’t stop to congratulate my teammates. I didn’t stop to shake hands with the other team.

I didn’t stop when Coach Andersen called for me, or when the head coach shouted my name.

I didn’t stop.

With every ounce of adrenaline surging inside of me, I sprinted to the fence, clearing it in one leap, jumped up and grabbed the railing to the bleachers, hauling myself over them like some sort of gymnast.

Once my feet met metal, I bolted up the stairs as fast as possible. The crowd seemed to sense my urgency and moved to the side, giving me space to climb.

A moment later, she was there. Right in front of me.

I took a deep breath for the first time in a week as I reached out for her hands. As soon as we touched, everything was right again.

But it wasn’t close enough. It wasn’t enough of her.

Slipping my hands from hers, I captured her waist, pulled her as close as possible. Her hands gripped my biceps, steadying herself.

And then, I kissed her. I kissed her to the sounds of everyone around us cheering, but I didn’t hear them. With her lips on mine, everyone seemed to disappear.
