“There’s just one last thing. Why did you come to the café with a gun? It’s so brazen and doesn’t line up with how you set up the fire.”

His head jerks back in surprise, his brows furrowed, just as a man in an expensive ass suit enters the room. “I’m Mr. Gates lawyer, and he’s done talking to you.”

“You just can’t fucking come in here! I’m in the middle of an interview and he didn’t fucking ask for you!” My blood pressure rises. I’m not done with this fucker.

Now that backup has arrived, Christopher is back to his cocky self, a smirk now on full display. I want to rip it right off his smug face.

“Mr. Gates has nothing else to say to you. Now, go prepare him for transport.”

“I don’t take orders from you,” I spat at the lawyer. Leaning over the table, I look him right in the eye. “You called her stupid, but you’re the idiot, Christopher. She had it all planned out, and you walked right into the trap because of your ego. Looks like it’syouwho isn’t as smart as you think.”

His eyes cut to mine, full of surprise and rage.

I give him a smirk of my own as I walk out the door. I may not have gotten exactly what I came here for, but it felt fucking good to leave him with that verbal blow. That’s all I really needed. To watch him realize the one woman he severely underestimated was responsible for nailing his ass.

Now it’s time to get back to my woman. The only place I want to be.

Chapter 42

Andrea

IreneandCharlieareat Jack’s house fussing over me. Jack insisted I didn’t need to be left alone so soon.

Adalyn and Andrew had to get back to their lives in Sacramento. I had to break the news to Addy that I wouldn’t be coming back there…ever. Not to live, anyway.

I’m staying here in Fraser with Jack. I love him more than I knew I could love another human. And I know without any doubt he feels the same way about me.

She told me after seeing Jack and me together, she didn’t expect anything else. She’s happy for me; I knew she would be. She just needed to see my happiness for herself first.

Andrew promised me the whole truth in time. He said things needed to be settled, and we needed to prepare for Christopher’s prosecution. He explained that this trial has so many components and moving parts, it could take years to prosecute.

Even though he couldn’t be assigned the case himself because it would be a conflict of interest, he wants to be in Sacramento to assist in any way he can. Having my brother back—the brother he was before whatever happened with him and Christopher all those years ago—is an amazing feeling. My gut stirs at how cryptic Andrew is being but I hope in time he trusts me enough to tell me his story.

Jack left hours ago to interview Christopher. My nerves are on edge with thoughts of them in a closed room together. Hopefully, Jack can keep his cool and allow the legal process to bring him to justice.

“What’s got you so deep in thought, kid?” Irene’s voice pulls me out of my worry.

“Just worrying about Jack’s interview with Christopher. I know how angry Jack is, and I completely understand it, but I don’t want anything bad to happen.” I can’t hide the sadness in my voice.

“Have a little more faith in Jack. Yes, heisangry, but he’s good at his job. He knows what he can and can’t do.” Irene almost seems a little offended on Jack’s behalf.

“I didn’t mean it that way. I know he’s a great detective, but this is different. This is personal. I don’t want the lines to blur.”

Taking a seat beside me on the sofa, Irene pats my legs. “I know what you mean, but he’ll be just fine. You’re worrying yourself for no reason. This is your time to heal and celebrate taking your life back.”

She gives me a kind smile. This softer side of Irene always catches me off guard. She really is the kindest soul, even if her exterior is rock hard.

Charlie comes from the back of the house. “I went ahead and cleaned the bathroom and changed your sheets.”

“Thanks, Charlie. Now sit down. You’ve been running around since you got here. Putting groceries away, cleaning, cooking, and that’s just the stuff I was able to see! I appreciate it so much, but we can still do some things ourselves,” I say with a laugh.

“Well, excuse a girl for wanting to be sure her bestie has everything she needs,” she says, faking offense.

She takes a seat in the living room with Irene and me. We turn the TV to an old classic movie, and we all fall silent, our attention on the plot in front of us.

The front door lock clicks over, and it opens. Jack comes through looking tired. He’s been a rock through everything. He never left my side the entire time I was at the hospital. Anytime I needed anything, he was right there. I’m eternally grateful for him.

Shifting in my seat to greet him, I wince from the pain in my shoulder.
