I walk over and open the door rather aggressively due to my frustration over the taco fiasco. My mouth falls open at the sight of Jack. He has on a pair of fitted dark wash jeans, a black button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up his forearms.

Oh, my. This man may be my Achilles heel. He looks mouthwatering.

He chuckles. “Are you going to let me in?”

That snaps me to attention, and heat instantly rushes to my cheeks.Oh my god.I was just staring at him like a piece of cake I wanted to lick all the icing off of.Get your shit together, Andrea. You can’t eat your landlord.

“Please excuse me. I was flustered over dinner. Come in.” There. Maybe that will explain my loss of braincells upon opening the door.

“Ahh, are we turning this into a night out then?” he asks with a smirk on his face.

I blush at the implication of something more than just a thank you for his hospitality.

“I think I can salvage most of it. How do you feel about tacos sans the actual taco?” My voice is laced with aggravation at my screw up.

Jack laughs heartily. “That sounds interesting. I’m up for anything.”

I feel my face heat at the thought of all the things that could mean. Even his cheeks pink up a bit.

We need redirection, pronto. Though I try to think of something intelligent to say, that all goes out the window when I blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.

“I’m a terrible cook. I don’t know why I decided to subject you to this. I’ve been living off sandwiches.” My nerves are frayed, and I feel like I’m rambling.

“Yeah, there’s no pressure. I only know how to make like two things. I’m just happy I didn’t have to figure out dinner for once tonight.” His words warm me, and I feel slightly less guilty.

“Well, hey… what about a taco salad instead? I think I have some lettuce.” Happiness radiates through me as I think of a way to salvage dinner.

“Sounds good to me. Do you need any help?”

I laugh. “I hope I can manage at this point. If I can’t, I think you should skip this dinner for your own safety.”

A booming bark of laughter fills the room from him. “Noted.”

I stand there, enjoying the moment and joining in with his laughter. This feels good. If I’m being honest with myself, a littletoogood. This could become addictive if a girl isn’t careful.

I make quick work of chopping up some lettuce since I already had all the sides ready for the tacos. Jack took a seat on the couch, and now he’s watching me work. It’s a little unnerving, and my body is hot from the wanted attention.

I clear my throat. “It’s ready! Let’s eat!”

I place two bowls of lettuce on the small table for us with the sides in the center so he can fix his how he likes.

I focus on putting my bowl together as he takes a seat across from me. Sitting in front of what may be the most handsome man I have ever seen makes me feel a little inadequate. His piercing eyes assess me.

Looking down, I realize I have flour all over my shirt from work. “Well, shit. I forgot to change.”

I wipe at my chest, trying to dislodge the flour, but it won’t budge. My gestures draw Jack’s attention to my chest, and I look up just enough to see his cheeks turn a slight pink. Suddenly, he averts his eyes, looking anywhere but at me.

“Don’t worry about it. You’re beautiful in everything I’ve seen you in.” Jack’s eyes widen as though he didn’t mean to say that out loud.

My lips curve into a smile, and I actively have to force it to not grow too much. “That’s very sweet of you, but I should’ve changed before you got here.”

Mentally, I’m doing a happy dance.He said I’m beautiful.

It’s quiet while he fixes his bowl, and I dig in. This is the first homecooked meal I’ve had since I got into town. Minus the burnt shell part, I think I did pretty darn good if I say so. Feeling proud of myself, I look up to see if Jack is digging in.

He seems to think the same thing as he grunts in pleasure. “Not bad, Andi. A guy could get used to this.”

“I could cook for us more often if you’d like? No need for both of us to cook when we’ll be eating by ourselves.”
