Page 83 of Unsealing Her Fate

She fans herself dramatically like it’s a hundred degrees in here. If I roll my eyes any more this morning, I may be in danger of dislodging them from their sockets.

“Oh, hush. It’s nothing,” I say with more conviction than I feel.

Her response is nothing more than an overly sarcastic, “Mmmhmm,” like she doesn’t believe that one bit.

I’m not sure I do, either.

Somehow, I make it to the end of the workday without any more questioning glances from Charlie. I hurry out of the café with a rushed goodbye. I want to get a phone and be back at the apartment to figure out what the heck I’m going to cook for dinner.

It needs to be simple. I hope that will prevent me from screwing it up.Why did I do this to myself? That’s right… Because that gorgeous man opened his home to you and drove you to work this morning. The least you can do is feed him.

Shaking off my worry about tonight, I make my way over to the little all-in-one store on Main Street to look for a phone. I walk in and search for where they may be shelved, but I don’t have much luck.

“Hey there. Can I help you?” a younger girl in jeans and a blue polo asks from behind me.

“Yes, hopefully. Do you carry phones?” I ask, suddenly nervous. If they don’t, I’m not sure where to get one.

“Yes, we do! It’s just a small selection though, and you’ll have to sign up for a monthly plan with the main carrier out here.”

She walks away, gesturing for me to follow. We arrive at a shelf on the far right with a whopping total of three prepaid choices, but it doesn’t matter.

I only have one question. “Which one is the cheapest?”

She looks a little taken aback by that but reaches for a basic flip phone before handing it to me. I take it and inspect it before nodding.

“This is perfect! Thank you. Where do I sign up for the plan? What all does that entail?”

She walks over to the checkout counter. “It’s pretty easy. You’ll buy a monthly card that will put minutes on the phone. Do you want unlimited?”

I shift side to side. Now isn’t the time to get shy about being broke. “How much is that one?”

She smiles kindly. “It’s thirty dollars a month, though you can buy a different card next time if that’s too much.”

I’m surprised the cost is less than I expected. I should be able to handle that. Since I don’t know how many minutes I’ll need, it’s better to go with unlimited.

“I’ll take that one then.”

I hand over the flip phone, and she pulls out the card before ringing it all up.

“Your total will be $98.26 with tax.”

I count out the cash and slide it over to her.

“How does this work? I mean, how do I actually set it up?” I ask as she hands me my change.

“Oh, it’s pretty simple. There’s an activation code on the card along with numbered directions. You’ll call the number, follow the prompts to activate the phone and card, and you’re good to go.” She hands me my bag.

I nod. “Okay, that doesn’t sound too bad.”

She smiles. “Have a good day!”

“You, too! Thanks for your help!”

I head out of the store and start the walk back to my new place. I run through my options for dinner. I have a pack of ground beef, and I can make some decent tacos. That will be perfect. It’s simple, and you can’t go wrong. Everyone loves tacos.

It’s five till six, and I’m freaking out. I put the hard taco shells in the oven to warm them, but something went wrong. They’re burnt to a crisp. How did I mess uptacos! I dump all of them into the trash just as I hear a knock at the door.

Great! No time to think of a plan b. Why did I do this again?
