“What? What was what about?” Gareth’s deep voice sounded so innocent; I knew it was a ploy. An act. He liked playing games. I think he got off on it, like he got off on torturing and killing people.

“You were talking to Erin,” I hissed out the words. “Pretty sure you’ve never said a word to her before.”

“That’s not true. I’ve spoken to her before. Not about anything important, but—” He paused when he saw the hatred simmering in my stare, and he laughed. He actually laughed at me, like this whole thing was funny. “What got your panties in a twist, hmm? Jealous I’m paying attention to someone who isn’t you?”

“No,” I spat out the word. “I’m worried you might try to hurt my friend because you’re a big, ugly dick.”

“Now, come on. We both know that’s not true.” Behind his glasses, his green eyes were lively and amused. “You don’t think I’m ugly, and last I checked, you go feral for my dick, so it can’t be that bad.”

I let out a frustrated sound. So what if he was easy to look at? Being attractive didn’t give him the right to be an asshole… or a serial killer, for that matter. “I don’t go feral for your dick. You’re just easy to play when you think I’m simping for it.”

“If that’s true, and I’m not saying it is, then you shouldn’t care that I’m talking to Erin.”

“Erin is my friend. I won’t let you hurt her.”

“Do you really think you could stop me, if that’s what I wanted to do?” He lifted his brows, shooting me a side glance as he made a left turn. He sped down the road, going quite fast. “Do you really think you could stop me from making her my next plaything?”

My jaw ground. “She’s got a family, Gareth. Parents who love her.”

“Love can always be bought. So can silence.” An intense smug expression crossed his face, and he ran a hand through his brown hair, his chest rising and falling with an exaggerated sigh. “If I want to play with Erin, that’s what I’m going to do. You can’t stop me.”

“Yes, I can,” I shot back.

“How? How would you stop me? Would you kill me?” His voice lowered to an intense whisper, almost like he’d been waiting for the topic of conversation to move to murder. “Honestly, I’d like to see you try.”

Oh, God. He probably got off on thinking about that, too. What a sick fuck. I hated him, I really, genuinely did.

I decided to switch to a different tactic, remembering what Alistair had told me. “I don’t think Alistair would approve of you killing your classmates willy-nilly.”Willy-nilly?Dear God, I sounded ridiculous.

That got Gareth to chuckle darkly. “Alistair can think whatever he wants. He doesn’t control me. He’s tried, but each and every time he’s failed.” He shot me a look. “You’re just his newest attempt. I could’ve told him it wouldn’t work for long, but he didn’t ask me.”

I was a tool for Alistair to use to try to rein in Gareth. In the beginning, I would’ve argued against a sentiment like that, but now my eyes had been opened and I knew it was as true as something could be.

“Maybe he’ll get tired of cleaning up your messes and throw you to the wolves,” I offered. “Or maybe he’ll kill you himself. He is like you in that way, isn’t he?”

That wasn’t what Gareth had been expecting me to say, clearly, because he didn’t answer right away. It took him a minute to say, “What makes you think that? From where I sit, you’ve hardly spoken to my uncle since you’ve moved in. That heart-to-heart he had with you yesterday must’ve been a big one.”

It was. Gareth had no idea how big it was.

“What exactly did he tell you? He told me you understood your purpose here, but it doesn’t sound like it.”

“He told me you act without thinking. You’re rash and impatient, quick to anger and even quicker to kill. He told me you killed your mom.” When I said that, I noticed his hands tightened on the wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. “Actually, I think Alistair would appreciate me trying to keep you away from Erin.”

All Gareth did was chuckle menacingly and ask, “Is that so?”

“Yes. I don’t think Alistair appreciates your tendencies to snap and kill. It’s been how many years now? Maybe heistired of cleaning up your messes.”

We arrived at the manor, and Gareth pulled us up the long driveway to the garage, hitting the button on the vizor and opening one of the garage doors. “Does that mean you’re in agreement with him, then? Does that mean you’ve finally come to the conclusion that you belong to me?” He pulled us into the garage slowly, and once we were parked, he hit the button and closed the large door behind us.

When I didn’t say a word, Gareth got out of the car, slamming the door so hard I jumped. My gaze followed him as he strolled around the car, relaxing and flexing his hands over and over. I thought he would go inside the house and leave me, abruptly end this conversation, but it seemed we weren’t quite done yet.

Gareth opened my door and reached inside, unbuckling my seatbelt and pulling me out. He slammed my back against the car, pinning me against it and towering over me with shadows dancing in his eyes.

“Tell me you’re mine, and I’ll stay away from Erin,” Gareth whispered, his breath hot on my face as he glared at me.

I didn’t know if my mom was home, if Alistair was in the house somewhere. I didn’t know if someone would wonder where we were, why we weren’t coming in the house, and come looking for us. Hell, even if my mom found us in this position, I didn’t think she’d blink an eye.

She’d tell me to take it, take whatever Gareth gave me, with a smile. She’d tell me to wear whatever mask I had to in order to make this life work for us.
