The men looked at Kendall’s bent legs, then up to her face, where she smiled contritely. Seemingly satisfied it had been an accident, guy number one nodded, then turned back around.

“No problem,” replied guy number two.

Peyton glanced over at Kendall, who rolled her eyes. “The last thing on my brother’s mind would be getting laid when he does something like that. God, men are so stupid.”

“I’m sure it will get lots of women interested,” Peyton said.

“Did it make you interested?”

“What?” Peyton blinked over at her.

“You heard me?”

“That’s not our agreement,” Peyton replied. It really didn’t matter if that little run around the bases had been like a shot to her ovaries. Their relationship was fake. He was sexy as sin in the bedroom and a jerk out of it. Well, sometimes he was a jerk. Sometimes he was…

“That’s not what I asked you.” Kendall pinned her with a stare.

Peyton took another sip of her beer and winced when she realized Kendall was still watching her, waiting for an answer.

The Texas batter walked up to the plate. “Oh good, the game is starting,” Peyton said.

“Chicken,” Kendall muttered.

Well, she wasn’t wrong.

As the game wrapped up with a 6-4 win for the Hawks, Kendall remained seated while the surrounding fans got up from their seats. Peyton stood up.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Kendall asked.

“Um, home.”

“Not a chance, honey. You’re coming downstairs with me. This is a ‘be seen’ activity. Can’t ‘be seen’ if you don’t wait for them to get out of the dressing room.” Kendall looked up at her from her seat. “Besides, don’t you want to lay claim to your guy so all those women who went gooey over that display don’t try to swoop in?”

Peyton’s stomach knotted at the idea of a bunch of women throwing themselves at Ryan. “I’m not really a lay your claim kind of girl.”

Kendall snorted. “Well, you better become one, fast.

“Is that what you had to do with Pete?”

“Not really no, he shuts things down mighty quick when he gets hit on, but sometimes with some fans it takes a woman’s touch to get the point across.”

“A woman’s touch?”

“Yeah, you know, more delicate” Kendall laced her fingers together and stretched her hands out in front of her like she was cracking her knuckles in preparation for a fight.

Peyton snickered at Kendall’s snarling face. There was nothing delicate about that look. “Got it.”

Kendall didn’t strike Peyton as the kind of woman who would tolerate her partner cheating on her. But then maybe, given that her brother was on the team, that wasn’t an issue for her. “With their schedule and how often they’re away and the fans, do you ever worry about Pete cheating on you?”

“God, no. I’d rip his nuts off.” Kendall shook her head. “But honestly, Pete isn’t that kind of guy. It’s not something I worry about.”

“Hmm.”

“He’s not,” Kendall growled. “Look Peyton, not all guys are like Andy. Sure, there are some assholes on the team, but they aren’t all like that. Pete isn’t, and my brother sure as hell isn’t.”

“How do you know?” She hated the insecurity in her own voice, and why did she care? This wasn’t real, so it didn’t matter anyway.

“Some things you just know. Besides why would you be with someone you can’t trust?”
