“Well, it doesn’t matter anyway because Ryan and I aren’t anything.”

“You sure about that?” Kendall asked.

“Absolutely.”

Kendall pushed up out of her seat. “Well, alright then, let’s go find out.”

Peyton stood up and followed Kendall through the stadium. She flashed some sort of ID to the security guard to let them through the gate marked private. Fans surrounded the fence line, waiting for a chance to get an autograph from their favorite players.

After several minutes, players began exiting the change room. Peyton’s heart pounded in her chest. What was that about? She was acting like a giddy fan. In an effort to look nonchalant, she shoved her hands in the pockets of her jeans and watched the byplay of fans vying for players’ attention as they screamed through the gate.

Kendall pushed off from the wall the second she saw Pete, leaving Peyton alone. The man that had been walking beside Pete walked toward her. “Hi there,” he said as he stopped in front of her.

“Hi?” She looked at him in confusion. Did she know him?

“Fuck off, Bryce.” At the sound of the deep masculine voice, the man in front of her turned.

“Seriously, Graves?”

“Seriously. So fuck off,” Ryan said again.

Peyton chewed her bottom lip as she looked at Ryan. Why did he have to look so good? And why was he looking at her like that? Should they hug? Kiss? God, she was a mess.

Ryan walked up to her and cupped the back of her head and pulled her toward him. She briefly heard him say, “Just go with it.” A moment before his mouth hit hers.

She sucked in a breath. Wow!

Her lips tingled as he pulled away. The kiss that should have been nothing. It was just a light peck, so why was she feeling so rattled? And why were her freakin’ nipples so tight?

When she looked up, Ryan was staring down at her with a slight smirk on his face. Arrogant jerk. Annoyed that the kiss had seemingly no effect on him, she scowled.

“You ready?” he asked.

“For what?”

The arrogant smile on his face grew. He draped his arm around her shoulder like he’d done it a million times. The absent gesture staking a claim for everyone to see. He was a lot better at this game than she was.

As they walked by the women lining the fence, she winced when she saw the look on their faces. Jealousy, malice, judgment. Okay, that she could do without. Where did they get off? What was wrong with people?

Outside, Ryan glanced around. “Where are you parked?”

“Oh, you don’t have to do all this.” She waved her hand around absently.

“All what?”

“The whole doting boyfriend thing,” she replied. This was so awkward. Maybe they should have discussed post-sex-fake-relationship protocol. Did he think they’d have sex every time they saw each other? Did she want to? Kind of, but did he? She bit down a growl of frustration. This was ridiculous.

Ryan scanned the parking lot, his gaze lingering on a group of people watching them. “Uh yeah I kind of do.”

“I parked at work and walked over.”

Ryan’s eyes widened. “Why wouldn’t you park closer?”

“It’s close. It’s free.” Peyton shrugged. “Daytime game, why not?”

“Okay, well, at least let me drive you to your car.”

“Honestly, Ryan, it’s unnecessary.”
