“Oh god,” she murmured. Was she ready for this? “I’m definitely going to need a drink.”

Kendall laughed loudly. “I knew I liked you. Let’s go.”

While they waited in line, Kendall fingered the edge of Peyton’s jersey. “I like the jersey. Did Ryan give it to you?”

Peyton felt the heat rising across her cheeks. Oh crap. So much for banishing the images of last night.

“Ew gross, guess that answered my question. I don’t even want to know,” Kendall groaned.

“Sorry,” Peyton mumbled.

“Don’t be. I’m glad my brother found someone he wants to have wear his jersey. Besides, I know how Pete reacted to me in his jersey, so I get the blushing. I just don’t want to think about it because it’s my brother and gross.”

“Fair enough.” Peyton laughed. “So, what kind of beer do your parents like?”

Kendall eyed the list of beers available and wrinkled her nose. “My dad considers himself a brew master so he’s going to critique anything we buy. Let’s go craft beer because he’s more likely to want that. My mom only drinks beer because she thinks she should at a ball game, so we’ll get her whatever is cheapest, since she’ll hate it either way.”

Peyton chuckled as she stepped up to the counter and ordered three different types of beer then turned to Kendall. “What about you?”

Kendall ordered a craft beer before reaching for her wallet.

“Nope, I’ve got this one,” Peyton told her.

“Okay, but the next round is on me,” Kendall replied.

“I don’t know that I plan on having more than one. I need to keep my wits about me with your parents.”

Kendall snorted. “Oh honey, you are definitely going to be having a second one. Your wits will need the moral support.”

“You’re not making me any less nervous about this, you know.” Peyton narrowed her eyes as she looked at Ryan’s sister, who just winked at her. Great, that was ominous. Peyton took a deep breath before grabbing two of the beer and leaving the other two for Kendall to grab.

They made their way back down to their seats. Kendall handed her mom the cheapest beer, then asked her dad which of the remaining beers he wanted first. With his selection down, she took hers from Peyton, then sat down next to her mom. Peyton slid into the seat beside Kendall and scanned the field. The seats were amazing. She’d only been to a handful of games before, and she’d never sat this close to home plate. She’d be able to see every pitch clearly from here.

“What happened to the third base line?” Peyton nodded towards the vacant seats where Kendall normally sat.

Kendall shrugged. “My dad likes to sit here, so I adjust when they come to town.”

Peyton scanned the crowd around them and tensed when she saw Carmella, Andy’s wife, a few rows over with a group of women decked out in Hawks’ gear.

Kendall leaned over and whispered. “That’s the WAGS section.”

“Wags?”

“Yeah, wives and girlfriends.”

Peyton nodded. Good to know. The roar of the crowd announced the home team was taking the field for warmup. Kendall stood up beside her and waved her arms as Pete blew a kiss into the crowd. Several women in the nearby sections attempted to grab the air kiss, but it was clear Pete only had eyes for Kendall.

Kendall continued to stand. When Ryan walked onto the field, she grabbed Peyton’s arm and pulled her up. “Stand so he knows you’re here.”

Ryan scanned the crowd and smiled as his parents waved their arms madly. Peyton could feel when his gaze landed on her and his smile changed. Damn, even from this distance, the man was potent.

He pointed at his back, then flicked his hand like he wanted her to turn around. She spun so he could see her back, then faced forward. The smile on Ryan’s face was like nothing she’d ever seen before. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Andy glance up at the crowd and scowl. Well, screw him. He could be as unhappy as he wanted to be about her being here. It would not dim her enjoyment of the day.

As Ryan’s family sat, Peyton dropped into her own chair. Ryan’s mom leaned forward across Kendall. “Well, that was interesting. I’ve never seen my son act like that before.”

“Like what?” Peyton asked.

A snicker sounded beside her before a beer was placed against her hand and Kendall murmured. “You’re gonna need that.”
