“I think that can be arranged.” Kia glanced at Jeff for agreement.

“Absolutely.” Jeff winked at Max, then turned back to her. “Hey, by the way, I meant to ask, why didn’t you tell me you knew the owner of the team?” he asked Kia.

“What?” Her brow furrowed in confusion. What the heck was he talking about? “How would I know the owner of the team?”

“He said you did his tattoos.” He hoisted Max up higher on his hip.

She stepped back so she could look at him clearly. She’d done a lot of tattoos, but she didn’t know a single person in San Diego who could afford a freaking baseball team. “Who’s the owner?”

“Matthias Hoffman.”

Matthias? Her eyes widened in surprise. “Seriously? Matt owns the team?”

“Well, him and a few other people, but yeah.”

“Huh, that’s wild. I had no idea. Last time I heard he was still living in Vegas.” She smiled as she pictured the other man. From what she knew about him, he had the Midas touch. He’d certainly helped her business. The suggestions he’d given her on how to capitalize on the competition win had grown her client base exponentially back in Tucson. Any business he was involved with seemed to be incredibly successful. Matt wouldn’t allow it to be any other way. The Hawks would be lucky to have an owner like him. “He’s a smart businessman. I’m sure he’ll be an amazing owner.”

“Yeah, he seems like a good guy,” Jeff responded.

Matt was a good guy. A little serious at times, but kind. When he’d found out she was a single mom, he’d given her an obscene tip and told her to take her son some place fun. They’d lost touch, but it would be good to catch up with him. “That’s really cool that he’s in town. I’ll have to call him and grab a coffee or something.”

“You should.”

She raised an eyebrow at him. If he’d been jealous of Brandon, she could only imagine how jealous he’d be of someone like Matthias. So why did he seem so chill about the idea of her meeting up with the other man? “Who are you and what have you done with Jeff?”

“I deserve that.” He dipped his head. “But no, no more jealousy. Lesson learned. Besides, I think you’d be crazy not to capitalize on a connection like that for your business. Viper wants you to raise your rates. Clients like Matthias could certainly afford to pay it.”

“And you can’t?” She smirked at him.

“Oh no, I totally can, but I figure there should be some perks to dating the artist.” He stepped closer to her.

“Is that right?”

Max sighed loudly. “Guys, come on, let’s go read.”

“Right sorry. Priorities.” Kia wrinkled her nose and grinned at her son.

Max’s face scrunched up. “Priorities are me, right?”

“Absolutely baby. You’re our top priority.”

“Good.” Max nodded once, like he was satisfied with that answer. “Let’s go read.”

Jeff held her gaze. The love he felt for her and Max clearly reflected on his face as he wrapped her hand in his and squeezed. “Let’s do it.”

Epilogue

6monthslater

Kia walked up the path to her front door. What the hell was going on in there? AC/DC Thunderstruck pounded out of the speakers at a deafening level. Sounded like Jeff was going old school.

She pushed open the front door and yelled. “Hello?”

Strangely enough, no one responded over the noise. She wandered further into the house. No sign of Max and Jeff in the living room or the kitchen. She peeked her head inside Max’s room. Nothing.

Just then, a loud crash sounded from her bedroom. Kia sprinted down the hall and found Max and Jeff lying in a heap on her bed, laughing their heads off. Her now broken bed.

“What is going on in here?” she yelled. No response. Why was the music so damn loud?
