She stepped closer to the bed, and Jeff’s head snapped up. He at least had the good sense to look embarrassed about his behavior. He waved his hand and she thought he said hi, possibly. Max launched on the broken bed, stumbling as he stepped on the bent mattress.

Jeff pulled out his phone and turned off the deafening music. “Hi, honey, you’re home.” He grinned like a little boy who’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

She put her hand on her hip and stared around her bedroom. “What are you two doing?”

“We broke your bed,” Max proclaimed.

“I can see that. I’m just a little confused about why you broke my bed.”

“Now we have to move in with dad,” Max declared.

She pulled on her earlobe. Surely she’d heard him wrong. “I’m sorry what?”

Max rolled his eyes. “Your bed’s broke so now we gotta move in with Dad.”

Okay, yep, she’d heard him right the first time. The answer still didn’t make any sense. Turning her attention to the supposed adult in the room, she pinned Jeff with her best disappointed mom stare. “Care to explain?”

“So here’s the thing,” Jeff began. “I asked Max what he thought I needed to do to get you to agree to move in with me.

“To move in with you?”

“Yeah.” He smiled.

“And you broke my bed?” She shook her head as she looked at the two mischievous peas in a pod.

Jeff shrugged. “It seemed like a good idea.”

“To break my bed?”

“Well yeah. Max figured if we broke your bed, you’d have to move in with me.”

“Why exactly?”

“Cuz where would you sleep, Mom?” Max scoffed.

Kia struggled to keep from laughing at her son’s logic.

Jeff wasn’t as good at not laughing. She narrowed her eyes and stared him down. “You know we’re in trouble if you are going to take advice from a five-year-old.” She raised her eyebrow at him.

“I’ll be six next week,” Max piped in.

“Good point, buddy.” Jeff hoisted Max onto his hip. The two put their heads together. “Do you think it worked?” Jeff asked his son.

Max turned and looked at her. His eyes squinted as he stared. He tilted his head left, then right. “I don’t think so,” he said in a loud stage whisper. The kid really needed to work on that skill, she mused.

Jeff regarded her as well, then his mouth tightened into a straight line, and he sighed. “Time to bring out the big guns?”

“Yep,” Max agreed.

The big guns? Oh boy. Kia braced herself for what these two might come up with next.

Jeff hopped off the bed and set Max on the floor beside him. He leaned down to his son. “Should we do this together?”

“Yeah, she doesn’t always say yes when you ask stuff.”

Jeff smirked, then quickly wiped it off and nodded. “Good point.” He grabbed Max’s hand, and they walked over to her. Jeff kneeled and pulled Max down beside him.

“Oh my god, what are you doing?” She gasped.
