“I mean he wants to discuss getting a tattoo. You had already told me you wanted to do a guys’ night, so it seemed like a good time to meet.”

“I saw the way he looked at you,” he grumbled.

“First, I can’t control how someone else looks at me. He’s a client, so how he’s looking at me is irrelevant. I don’t mess with clients.”

“You messed with me.”

Kia rolled her eyes. “Not the same thing, and you know it. Second, if I was going to date someone else, it sure as shit wouldn’t be one of your teammates. That’s tacky.”

“God forbid you be tacky,” he scoffed.

The sarcastic scoffing sound just pissed her off more. “Third, I don’t do jealousy. I told you when I broke up with Austin that I don’t cheat. You either believe me or you don’t.” She stared at him. “If you don’t, then we may as well stop this before we get any further, because we clearly don’t have the foundation to build shit.”

“It’s not that I don’t trust you.”

“No?” She dropped onto the edge of the mattress. “What is jealousy if it’s not a lack of trust?”

“It’s not you I don’t trust. It’s everybody else.”

Unimpressed, she tapped her foot on the floor in front of her. “Same thing. If you trust me it doesn’t matter what anybody else does. Like I said, I can’t control them. I can only control myself and I’m telling you I’d never cheat. Therefore, jealousy is a wasted emotion.”

“I don’t like when other guys look at you.”

“Oh my god, get over yourself. You’re a flippin’ professional athlete. It’s not like women aren’t ogling you every time you go out. Do you think I care?”

“You should,” he mumbled.

“Why? Do you plan on cheating on me?”

His mouth gaped. “God, no.”

“Then why should I care if they look at you? You’re a good-looking guy. Of course they’re going to look. The only thing I care about is what you do with that attention.”

“I’m not going to do anything.” He stepped closer to her and crouched. “I think I’ve made it pretty clear how badly I want us to try to make this thing between us work.”

“Exactly my point. I have zero tolerance for cheating. I don’t do it and I expect the same level of respect from you. Jealousy is a waste of time. We either respect each other or we don’t. If we don’t, then what the hell are we doing here?”

He moved closer to her. “We respect each other.”

“Do we?” She raised one eyebrow as he placed his hand on her knee.

“Yeah, we do. Sorry, you’re right. My problem was with Sims, not you.”

Oh, my god. Men. “Brandon wasn’t looking at me like anything other than someone who was excited to get a tattoo. That’s what you saw and what you heard in his voice.”

“You don’t know that.” His jaw tightened.

“Trust me, I do. I’ve tattooed enough people to know what it looks like. Besides, he’s your teammate. He knows why I’m here.”

“That doesn’t always stop people.”

She leaned back to look him in the face. “Is Brandon that kind of person?”

“Nah, I don’t think so. From what I know of him, he’s a good guy?”

“So what’s the problem?”

He shifted back on his feet. “I don’t know. Nothing I guess.”
