“Good.” She leaned over and pressed a kiss to his lips.

“Now let’s go back downstairs so I can watch this BBQ mastery Gonzo was going on about.”

“Or.” Jeff licked his lips and stared at her. “We could stay up here and make up properly.” He waggled his eyebrows at her.

“There’s zero chance I’m having sex with you with your friends downstairs looking after our son.”

“Why? They wouldn’t care.” He trailed his hand up her thigh. “If anything they’d expect me to try.” He leaned in and pressed a kiss to the side of her throat. “It’s been a long training camp already.”

“Mom? Dad?” Max’s voice sounded from somewhere in the hallway.

“My god, that kid,” Jeff groaned and dropped his head on her lap. Kia burst out laughing. Max seemed to have impeccable timing. She clapped Jeff on the shoulder. “Come on, Romeo, let’s go see what he needs.”

“I’ll tell you what I need,” he grumbled.

She snickered. Men were such babies.

Chapter Twenty

“Youknowwhereyou’regoing to meet Brandon?” Jeff’s lip curled up slightly as he asked the question. She didn’t think he even realized he’d done it. Clearly, he still wasn’t 100% comfortable with her meeting with his teammate. Well, too bad. This was her livelihood. She wasn’t letting him mess with that.

Kia went back into the house and grabbed her purse and keys. She took one last look at the map on her phone. Feeling confident she knew where she was going, she headed outside.

Twenty minutes later, she pulled open the door of a funky coffee shop. She scanned the room and spotted Brandon sitting in the back corner with a mug of some kind of beverage on the table in front of him. She nodded toward him and pointed at the counter to let him know she was going to grab a drink.

Brandon stood up and walked toward her. “Let me buy your coffee.”

“Don’t be silly. I’m perfectly happy to buy my own.”

“I know, but it’s the least I can do. You’re in town for a break and here I am dragging you back into work stuff.”

“It’s all good. I would have just been doodling or something today anyway with the guys all off go-karting.”

Brandon smiled. “Sounds like fun. I’m sure your son will love it.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “What’s your son’s name again?”

“Max.”

“Right, I should know that. I’ve heard the guys talking about him.”

She slid up to the counter and ordered a hazelnut latte and before she could even pull out her wallet Brandon was holding his card out to tap the machine to pay.

“Thank you.”

“No problem.”

Kia tilted her head back to look him in the eyes. “So what have they been saying?”

“Nothing bad, that’s for sure. Smitty seems pretty stoked about him. Grilling the guys with kids about things he might like.” Brandon grinned and shook his head. “It’s been pretty amusing to watch, honestly.”

Kia couldn’t help but smile as she pictured Jeff questioning his teammates. “That would explain the pile of toys in the living room when we arrived.”

A deep laugh rumbled from Brandon’s chest. “Yeah probably. It’s cool to see him so happy.”

“Was he not happy before?”

“Eh, I wouldn’t say he wasn’t happy. Smitty’s always pretty laid back and laughing, having fun. It’s just now, he’s… I don’t know. Just different, but in a good way.”

Warmth flowed across her chest. It was nice to hear that Max and her coming into his life had made a change for the better that was noticeable to his teammates.
