“Good luck today, Dad. Hit me a homer.”

“No pressure.” Jeff made a face. “Unfortunately, Maxie, it’s not that easy to hit a home run. How about I promise to look over here at you before I bat, and I’ll adjust my helmet, so you know I’m looking at you?”

“Kay, do this.” Max grabbed his own cap and wiggled it aggressively on his head.

Jeff winced. “Maybe let’s go a little more subtle.” He took his hat off and pushed his sandy blond hair back from his forehead, then set his hat back on his head. “How about that?”

“Kay, but scratch your nose too,” Max demanded.

Jeff’s lips curved up slightly as he looked at his son and nodded. “Deal.” He tapped Max on the bill of his cap. “Okay, I gotta get back out there. Give me a hug.”

Max wrapped his arms around Jeff’s neck and squeezed. Kia placed her hand against her chest as a wave of emotion swept through her.

The pair separated. Jeff looked at her and flicked his head for her to step toward him. “Come here, Keys.”

She shook her head. He knew her feelings about PDA.

“You didn’t think you were getting off that easy, did ya?” He smirked.

“Yeah.” She blinked at him innocently.

Jeff sighed, then in a lightning-fast move, he hooked his hand in the waistband of her shorts and yanked her forward. She fell against him. As she rested her hands on his chest for balance, he pressed his lips against hers. Her traitorous body melted into him briefly before she jumped back and stood upright. Her gaze instantly darted to Max, who stood with his eyes bugging wide open back at them.

“Are you guys in love?” Max asked in awe.

“Would you be okay if we were?” Jeff asked.

Kia’s heart raced. Why would he say that? There was a big difference between admitting they were dating and saying they were in love. Did he love her? Did she love him? Holy shit.

“Yeah,” Max whooped. He threw his arms around Jeff’s neck again. “This is awesome.”

“Agreed.” Jeff’s eyes locked with hers as he spoke.

The man was trouble, there was no doubt about it. The little zip in her stomach said she liked it, not that she would tell him that. Shaking her head, she waved him off. “Go play your game.”

Jeff winked, his blue eyes sparkling with amusement as he blew them a kiss before running back onto the field.

“So that’s your dad?” The man behind them leaned between their seats.

Max turned around. “Yeah.”

“He’s a pretty good player,” the man responded.

Kia shifted to look at the group of older men in the row behind them. It was only March and already their darkened skin spoke of seasoned sports fans who spent hours outside soaking up the Arizona sun.

“He’s the best player ever,” Max told him.

“Is that so?”

“Yep.” Max’s head bobbed up and down.

“And is this your mom?” the man asked, nodding at her.

Max looked at her, then back at the man. “Yep.”

“And you two are a couple?”

Kia’s spine stiffened. How was this any of his business?
