“He had the gall to invite me for dinner to talk about the article on me.”

Annie raised her eyebrows. “You’re mad at him, but you know, this may just be the opportunity for you to tell your side of the story. And maybe he could find out why James Webster, the reporter in Sacramento, sent you an email.”

Vivian glared at her sister. “Seriously?”

Annie grinned. “Just saying.”

Scowling, Vivian crossed her arms. “Would freaking Brett Carson forever be a thorn in my side? I’ve crossed state lines, but his actions still have an impact on my life. When will it ever stop?”

Annie took her arm. “Come on, let’s find Mitch and go home; I’m so cold, I can’t think.”

Aiden walked awayfrom Vivian, berating himself. Vivian was livid, rightly so. He probably shouldn’t have confronted her with what he’d discovered before he’d had a chance to find out more about what had happened to her in Sacramento. Rookie bad move.

Patience had never been his strong point. He’d rushed it, and he’d upset Vivian again.

As he neared his car, he saw Tommy, the little boy who’d been so glad to see Doctor Vivian, kicking at the snow, shoulders slouched forward. Aiden looked around and could see the little boy’s parents still skating on the ice.

“Everything okay, pal?” Aiden asked softly, not wanting to startle the boy.

Tommy stared at him for a few seconds. “You’re Doctor Vivian’s friend?”

Grinning, Aiden looked over his shoulder to where he’d left Vivian. She and Annie were with Mitch. “She’s mad at me at the moment, but yeah, I hope she still thinks I’m a friend.”

Tommy kicked at the snow a few more times before he looked at Aiden again. “Do you know anything about buying flowers?”

This seemed to be a serious question. Aiden nodded. “I do, but have you asked your mom or dad?”

Tommy rolled his eyes. “And have Mark tell everyone?”

“Oh, yes. Older brothers.”

“He’s a pain in the…” Tommy bit on his lip. “Mom gets mad when I say that word.”

Aiden had a hard time keeping his face straight. “So, what do you want to know about buying flowers?”

“It’s nearly Valentine’s Day. You’re supposed to give flowers to the person you love.”

Aiden nodded. “That’s right.”

“So how do you do that?”

“Well, you can phone…”

Sighing, his shoulders slumped forward, Tommy shook his head. “Mark.”

“Oh, yes, your brother will hear. I see. Well, then you have to go to the flower shop.”

“I’ve been there, but then I didn’t know what to say. I also don’t know how much money it will cost.”

Ah, so ithadbeen Tommy he’d seen in front of the flower shop. Aiden crouched down. “Tell you what. If you tell me when, I’ll meet you at the shop and help you.”

Tommy’s eyes lit up. “You’ll do that?”

“Yes, I’ll do that.”

“Thanks, Mister…”
