“It’s not a line; it’s the truth.”

“You haven’t answered my question.”

Picking up his glass, he avoided looking at her. After all this time, it was still difficult to talk about his mom and dad. “Our parents both passed away. My dad died when Riley and I were still in school. Craig was already studying at the time. My mom passed away a year later. That was when Janice moved in with us.”

She reached across the table to take his hand. “I’m so sorry.”

The waiter was back to take their order, and she dropped his hand quickly.

“What can you recommend?” Aiden asked.

“You like pizza?”

“Doesn’t everyone?”

She laughed, and his heart did a double flip. Backward. If he wasn’t mistaken, he was in deep trouble.

By half-past nine, everyone else had left, and the waiter had cleared their table.

“I have an idea they want us to leave,” Vivian said as she looked at her watch. She couldn’t believe it was this late already. For the first time in a long time, she’d actually relaxed and enjoyed someone else’s conversation. At times, it had even been possible to ignore the palpable sexual vibe surrounding the two of them.

Shakily, she inhaled. She shouldn’t even be thinking about any kind of vibe with this guy, let alone a sexual one. One, he was a reporter, and two, he was leaving at the weekend. The whole thing had heartache written all over in—in neon lights. But she couldn’t stop staring at his mouth. What would it be like to kiss him?Oh, my goodness, so not something I should be thinking about right now.

He looked around them. “You’re right. I didn’t realize everyone else has left.” He quickly got up and helped her with her coat.

As they walked out of the restaurant, he took her hand again. Electricity buzzed, and she felt his eyes on her but studiously looked away. What had happened to her resolve to stay away from him as far as possible?

He helped her into the car before he got behind the wheel. Instead of starting the car, though, he turned toward her. “I know it’s late and you work tomorrow, but I don’t want to take you back just yet. Janice has sent a message to say she’s back but has gone to bed already. What about a nightcap at her place?”

“I don’t think that’s a good…”

He reached out and touched her face. “I really want to kiss you, and if I do it here like I want to, everybody would probably know about it by breakfast.”

Her breath left her body in one swoosh. “That is definitely not a good idea.”

“As you wish.” He dropped his hand and started the car.

Her whole body was on fire. He wanted to kiss her. She’d been thinking about kissing him all night long. What was the harm in a kiss?

“Okay,” she got out. “But just a kiss.”

Without saying a word, he grabbed her hand and stepped on the gas. Within minutes, they stopped in front of Janice’s house. Aiden was opening her door before she could catch her next breath.

“I’ll take you back if that’s what you want.” In the streetlight his eyes looked feverish.

She shook her head and stepped out of the car. Talking wasn’t possible. Her mouth was dry, her breath had hitched somewhere in her throat, and the number of butterflies in her tummy had doubled. This was such a bad idea, but she wanted this. More than anything.

Once they were inside, he closed the front door behind them and standing behind her, took off her coat. The next moment, something featherlike touched her shoulders. Catching her breath, she turned her head. Aiden was trailing soft kisses over her shoulder, generating a series of electrical sparks. Heat streaked through her whole body while the temperature around them rose by several degrees.

His lips brushed over her shoulder once more before he lifted his head. “I’ve wanted to do this since the moment I laid eyes on you tonight.” He took her hand. “My bedroom or the living room?”

Desire slammed into her, and visibly shuddering, she blindly walked toward the living room where a fire was happily burning in the fireplace. Not that she needed any more heat. She dropped her handbag. Behind her, the only sound was the click of the door as Aiden closed it behind them.

He turned her around, his hands stroking her shoulders while blue eyes, nearly black with desire, raked over her. “May I please kiss you now? It’s all I’ve been thinking about tonight.”

She couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe.
