“What do you mean? Sam Bachini is no supreme dark lord.”

Matteo scoffs and Clarice shakes her head, looking as if she wants to run from the scene.

“Sam Bachini isn’t his father.”

“Then who is?” Matteo says roughly, and Clarice shrugs.

“I don’t know his name, but Jefferson told me Mario has more power than any of them. He was set to inherit the title of Supreme Dark Lord when his father dies, and they are all powerless to refuse him anything.”

“Where’s Jefferson now?” I ask quickly, knowing he was with Clarice in New York, and she sobs, “I don’t know.”

I stare at Matteo in confusion and from the look on his face this is unwelcome news to him and then more soldiers crowd into the chamber and report back.

“We have ten women all wearing black robes and are scared as fuck. They all tell the same story. They were taken off the streets and brought here to serve Mario and Diana.”

“Any other names?” Matteo asks, and the soldier shakes his head. “None.”

“Take them home and make a note of their addresses. We may need to call on them for more information. Make sure you get their story before they leave. We have a man hunt to conduct.”

I turn to Matteo and note the worry in his eyes and my heart sinks when I realize we have only made an impossible situation worse. We don’t even know who we’re dealing with, and it appears the answers lie back where I came from.

I reach for his hand and say with determination.

“I think it’s time to go home.”

He stares at me long and hard and then nods, knowing exactly what I’m getting at, and he shouts to a nearby soldier, “Take this woman to the apartment and make her comfortable. Don’t let her out of your sight and get her medical attention from our usual doctor.”

The soldier springs forward and takes Clarice’s arm and the panic in her eyes makes me say with a comforting smile, “It’s ok. You’ll be safe there. Probably safer than at home. Just tell us what you can remember, every small detail, whether you think it relevant or not. We’ll figure a way out of this.”

She nods and says falteringly, “I’m sorry, Abi.”

“It’s ok.” I smile, but my heart has hardened toward the girl I once regarded as a close friend. No matter what her reasons were, she still betrayed me and it’s doubtful I will ever truly forgive her for that.

As she walks away, Matteo slips his arm around my shoulders and says softly, “Let’s go home.”

CHAPTER31

MATTEO

What a fucking day. I am still struggling to make sense of it all and as we leave Mario to burn in hell, I head home with my wife safely by my side. Cesare and Stephanie take the car in front and as Abigail snuggles beside me, it’s good to shut the whole world out.

“I was so afraid I’d never see you again.” She whimpers, the tears sliding down her face as she turns to face me.

I stroke away her tears and whisper, “I would search every corner of the universe until I found you. I meant what I said back at that house of horrors. I love you.”

Her eyes widen and I dip my head and press my mouth against her heavenly lips and as the black robe parts, her shivering body presses against mine and she whispers, “I love you too and I am proud to be your wife.”

With a low moan, I kiss her deeply and with a hunger that I must suppress for now. She has been through torture, and I will tread carefully until she heals.

Most of the journey is spent holding Abi. I can’t let her go and just contemplating what may have happened back at that hellish house makes my blood run cold.

Abi is silent beside me, and I’m worried about her. I’m used to the shit this life throws up daily, but she isn’t. All her life she has been protected and shielded from the dark side and now she has faced it head on, with a front-row seat that must have affected her.

She snuggles closer and whispers, “I’m still amazed my father is involved with this Dark Lord’s situation. He just doesn’t seem the type.”

As I remember what Dom told me about his experience with the Dark Lords, I’m doubtful this was just Mario’s twisted mind acting out his fantasies. However, I agree. It does seem surprising that Jared Kensington would don a black robe and carry out illegal acts for the sake of a club he belongs to and yet he sold his daughter. He must have some serious heat on him to make him do that.

“Do you think my mother knows?”
