Abigail probes and I sigh heavily, rubbing her shoulder while I try to make sense of my thoughts.

“Possibly not. I heard he has a connection with Judge Stevenson and Sam Bachini.”

“It may not be what Mario told us, and is something perfectly innocent.”

Her voice lifts with hope, which makes me feel like a bastard because obviously it’s not innocent at all.

“Do you think?”

I drop a light kiss on top of her head and try to inject some reassurance into my voice. “Listen, Mario controlled a damaged, evil mind and would have made a saint appear corrupt to suit his own ends. Only your father can tell you what this is really about and I’m guessing if he realized what you went through, he would be enraged.”

“I suppose.”

Abigail sighs. “I still can’t believe Clarice was involved. She always told me she hated Jefferson. Why did she want to be his wife?”

“Power perhaps. It’s a lethal drug that many overdose on. My own father was obsessed. Diana too. It makes people do the most unbelievable things when it’s within their grasp. I’m guessing that’s the reason for this whole shit show and whoever Mario’s father turns out to be is the one wielding most of it.”

“Do you have any idea who he is?”

“No. It may even be Sam Bachini for all I know, and Mario fabricated that as well. I’m guessing Jefferson could help us with that, so it’s important we find the bastard and discover what he knows.”

I remember the man who crawled across the room back at my club with disgust. He will always crawl through life, taking what he can without earning a cent of it. He’s the worst kind of man and hides his corrupt soul behind designer suits and fancy living. At least people understand what they get with me. I don’t pretend to be anything else, which makes him the most dangerous kind of criminal.

I’m not surprised when Abigail falls asleep and I’m glad of it. She has been through so much and is probably exhausted.

As her head falls to my lap, I pull out my phone and text my brothers.

Matteo

This Dark Lord’s shit is driving me insane. Mario is no longer a problem but threw something up I need checking out. His parentage.

Dom

I feel you, brother. I’m still scraping that shit off my soul. I’ll ask Flora what she knows. Good job with Mario. I hope he’s enjoying his new home.

We must be careful what we say over text, and this thread will be deleted almost immediately.

Leo’s reply follows immediately.

I’ll do some digging. Regarding my own plans, the target is taking a short vacation before our meeting in a few days’ time. It may be the appropriate time to pay him a visit.

Knowing we will feel a lot better when we know what is written in our father’s will, that can’t come soon enough for me and then Leo texts.

Leo

Any news on Diana?

Matteo

Missing presumed plotting our downfall.

I type back, my mind switching to Diana and the reasons behind her involvement in this. Something isn’t adding up and I still don’t believe she wanted Mario dead. It doesn’t make sense because she loved him so much, she would do anything he asked.

There is something we aren’t seeing, and it may be standing hidden in full view. I’m guessing the answer lies with Mario’s parentage and that is the most important thing right now. To discover who Mario Bachini really is and then I’m guessing it will all slot into place and the blurred picture will become a lot clearer.
