I don’t miss Flora’s wide eyes as she sees my expression and, grabbing Chastity’s hand, I pull her from the terrace before she can even say, ‘hi.’

“Leo, what’s the hurry?” She says and I note that her voice is shaking a little, which tells me everything I need to know.

I say nothing until we reach my bedroom and as we step inside, she says angrily, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“Something’s happened?”

I regard her with a dark expression, daring her to lie to me.

To my surprise, she sits on the edge of the bed gingerly and won’t meet my eyes as she says with a shrug, “What happened?”

“You tell me, Chas.”

She won’t look at me and it angers me more than the fact she’s keeping something from me and in two strides I reach her and grasp her face in both hands, forcing her to look at me. The pain and fear in her eyes does something to my heart and if anything, I am hurting more than her right now and I say huskily, “I’ll ask you again. What happened?”

Her eyes fill with tears, and it shocks me because what has happened to the brave woman who could take on the world single-handed?

“I killed Carlos; at least I thought I did.” She sniffs, not meeting my eyes.

The blood rushes in my head as I struggle to keep my shit together.

“Tell me.”

This is something I have zero time to deal with, and I release her face and sit beside her, grasping her hand protectively.

Chastity tells me what happened, and her voice shakes the entire time, telling me she’s been affected deeply by the whole thing, and I’d be surprised if she hadn’t been. The man murdered her parents, and this has been a long time coming, but even I am not prepared for the story she relays through trembling lips.

When she gets to the part when he touched her, my anger has no limits, and it takes every ounce of self-control I have not to fucking smash something and lose my shit entirely.

Instead, I grasp her hand a little tighter and as she finishes her story, she bursts into tears and sobs, “I think I walked into their trap.”

“Listen to me, Chas.”

She gazes up at me and I snarl, “You did a fucking stupid thing back there and I am beyond angry. So angry I am really struggling not to react to this.”

She stares at me with a dark expression of her own, reminding me this woman takes no orders from any man. Until me, that is because I am itching to punish her for putting her life in danger like that and I snarl, “If I had more time, I would tell you every fucking reason why you’re in such fucking trouble right now, but time is not on our side. I can’t believe you did something so fucking stupid, but we will talk about that if we make it through the day.”

She says nothing and if anything, her blank expression is a familiar mask to hide behind and I hate that I’m not reacting well to this when it’s obvious she needs love and reassurance right now. Well, she came to the wrong man for that, and I snarl, “Matasso has always used a doppelganger. Someone to take his place in fear of attack.”

Her eyes are wide as I hiss, “Giselle may have tricked you. Was that Carlos in the shower or the decoy? Did you have any doubt about who you were dealing with?”

“No.” She shakes her head and shivers. “He came at me from behind and I only saw his face when I rearranged his neck. The water was cascading over it, but I would recognize those despicable features anywhere.”

“Or did you just accept what your brain was telling you? That this must be Matasso, because you had no reason to doubt it.”

She stops, opens her mouth to speak, and I watch the doubt manifest in her eyes as she falters, “I don’t know.”

“Giselle.” I snap. “You saw her in the car. How did she seem to you?”

“She smiled.”

“Was it one of thanks, relief or something else?”

Chastity shrugs. “Like she knew something I didn’t and had a secret.”

I want to smash something so badly and clench my fists and I say icily, “The original plan still stands.”

“What plan?”
