“We take Matasso out before he reaches that lawyer’s office.”

Chastity looks afraid, but I don’t have time to reassure her with the details and snap, “Get dressed. We leave in thirty minutes.”

I make to leave to inform Ryan of the situation and her voice stops me in my tracks as she whispers, “It felt so good.”

The slight tremble to her words makes me feel like the biggest bastard living, and I turn and watch her eyes flashing across the room as she smiles. “There is a fifty-fifty chance I killed my parent’s murderer and just before he died, their names were the last ones he heard. If I got the wrong man, I’d be surprised because I saw something register in those eyes the second before they dulled forever. He knew, Leo. He fucking knew, and if Giselle sent me the wrong man, I’d be surprised. There must be another reason why she is going ahead with whatever plan they made, so prepare yourself for that.”

She stands defiantly, staring after me as if she is the bravest woman in the world and it does something to me inside. At this moment, I am not worthy of licking her shoe and I feel that deep down in my heart. She is brave, magnificent, and beautiful, and I am the luckiest guy on the planet that she is even giving me the time of day. So, I stop in my tracks and retrace my steps and as I draw close, reach out and cup her beautiful face in my large, rough hands.

“I love you, Chastity Blake, and for your information, as soon as this shit is over, I am buying you a fucking engagement ring.”

“What’s this, a mirage?”

She holds up her hand, the huge fuck off diamond glinting in the sunlight that filters through the window.

“It’s a statement, a pretense, and is not the ring you wanted. This time we chose one you will wear with pride on your finger, knowing it was chosen with love in mind, not business.”

Leaning down, I kiss her softly, loving the taste of the familiar. The flavor of my woman and I will never tire of it, or of her, because Chastity will become my wife if we make it through the day.

“What if I say no?” The gentle tone of her voice makes me raise my eyes and snarl, “I never want to hear that word again.”

“You fucking asshole.” She giggles and the light in her eyes makes me smile, knowing the pain has been extinguished by the softer approach. One that reminds her she’s not on her own anymore and even though I am a dominant bastard with no patience, I will always put her best interests before mine.

We share the sweetest kiss, a promise even. Whatever this day holds for us, we will face it together. If necessary, we will die together and just as long as we are together in the afterlife, I will die a happy man.

CHAPTER42

CHASTITY

We leave as a family. The Ortega family and it’s intimidating as fuck.

Leo is the scariest fucker I have ever met, but his brothers aren’t far behind him, especially Dom, who is glowering around him as if he hasn’t eaten a human today.

Flora, in direct contrast, is a sweetheart, the picture of angelic innocence who walks beside a monster. I pity anyone who gets in their way because Domenico Ortega looks as if he could tear an army apart for his own pleasure and not even break a sweat.

Abigail appears as if she’s about to attend a sorority interview. The perfect all-American girl, with her smart suit and long sandy hair tied in an elegant chignon behind her head. Her large purse giving the impression she has prepared well for the meeting, her designer sunglasses already in position concealing her expression. She is probably the coolest woman I have ever met and possibly one of the friendliest. They both are and I am happy to know that if things work out, we will all be part of the same family.

Matteo and Abigail leave first, followed closely by Dom and Flora. Three cars for each brother, which always seems excessive to me. Then I leave with Leo and Ryan and as we head through the gates, I wonder if we will make it back at all. It scares me and I don’t scare easily because I’ve never had anything to lose before. Now I haveeverythingto lose, and I glance down at the strong hand holding mine tightly and a surge of love hits me for the man who ran away with my heart when I wasn’t paying attention.

“Any word on Diana?” Leo says impatiently, and Ryan shakes his head.

“No sign of her. The last sighting was when she drove off with the governor.”

“I don’t like it.” Leo sighs and Ryan nods his agreement.

“She’ll be there.” He reassures Leo, who nods grimly.

“I have no doubt about that. She probably still believes Carlos will be the new Don Ortega, which is why she’s cozying up to him.”

I listen keenly and then say with interest, “What will happen to Diana when this is over?”

Leo shares a look with Ryan and grins.

“Diana’s plan probably involves leaving with the Matassos. She would be a fool if she thought her home was safe with us and I’m guessing the governor is her back-up plan.”

“I thought he was married?” I say with confusion, and both men laugh.

“It’s never stopped her before.” Leo grunts.
