The last word was lost in a sudden breath as Alex slid her fingers deep inside, her mouth warm and wet against the nape of Lily’s neck. She paused, holdin

g her against the wall until she whispered that she wanted more. Lily’s thighs tightened around Alex’s hips, and she moaned as Alex started fucking her, leaning her head back against the cool tile. Alex’s touch was intense, gentle, and unrelenting in the same breath. She snaked her tongue into Lily’s mouth with the same rhythm, then slid her mouth down her neck, listening to Lily breathe and memorizing the pace she needed, then taking her just beyond it.

“Don’t stop.” Lily’s head sank to Alex’s shoulder, and Alex felt a shudder move through her. “Just don’t stop—”

???“Shh.” Alex’s voice was slick and molten between them. She moved to Lily’s ear, her words as ethereal as the haze of steam between them. “I’ve got you.”

Lily leaned back, her hands tangled into Alex’s hair, her lips open and flushed, hips circling against Alex’s hand. Alex curved the fingers inside her slightly and slicked her thumb over Lily’s clit, swollen and responsive under her touch.

“Tell me what you want.”

“Alex.” Lily’s words and breath melded and scraped like liquid metal as she found each one slowly and strung them together. “Make me come for you.”

That was it. That was all Alex needed to press her back against the tile, pinning her there with the heat of her mouth, hips setting the pace for the fingers that were still deep inside. She angled her hand to stroke Lily’s clit with every thrust, and Lily whimpered for more as her orgasm crested inside her. Her cheeks were flushed a deep pink, eyes closed, and the curves of her breasts glistening with steam as she grabbed at the wall behind to anchor herself in a spinning world of intensity.

“Come for me, baby,” Alex said, watching as Lily tensed and bit her lip. “Just let go.”

She watched as the orgasm surged through Lily and felt her body tremble deep inside as it shook her, wringing out the last of her breath. Lily leaned forward on Alex’s shoulder and wrapped her legs around her waist again, still shuddering with the last delicious waves as Alex opened the shower door and carried her out of the bathroom to the bed.

“Morning, handsome.”

Sam opened one eye and then slung her forearm back over her eyes. Sara set the tray of croissants and jam on the nightstand and poured Sam a cup of coffee from the carafe, smiling as she watched Sam’s eyes flutter open. Sam sat up slowly and leaned back against the headboard, rubbing her forehead with the heel of her hand.

“God.” Sam took the steaming cup of black coffee from Sara and squinted through the wide beam of sunlight that seemed unnecessarily robust for early morning. “Waking up to you looking like that never gets old.” She pulled Sara closer by the front of her robe that was still damp from her shower. “Come here.”

Sara leaned in for the kiss and then another before she stood to get her own cup of coffee. “Right back at ya, Draper.” Sara eyed her rumpled dark hair, tight white tank top, and black boy shorts, then pulled up her shirt to get a better view before Sam playfully swatted her hand and reached for a croissant.

Sam had been part of every aspect of building the retreat over the last two years, and the definition in her abs and shoulders reflected it. The salt and pepper starting to show at her temples in the last few years had seemed to double recently, which Sara loved, but lately, she’d started to worry that Sam was struggling with something. She’d watched her walk down to the dock, drop her clothes, and swim to the island a few times after dinner in the last week, which was always a clue she had something heavy on her mind.

“I can’t believe I slept so late.” Sam picked up her phone from the bedside table and looked at the time. “What are your plans for the day?”

“I’m driving Moxie into town to help Mary out with some things at the drugstore, but nothing other than that.”

“Oh, I see how it is.” Sam smiled and shook her head, settling back against the headboard. “Mary has her hooked on Days of Our Lives now too?”

“Well, she won’t admit it, but yes.” Sara pulled apart her croissant and topped it with a smear of fresh butter, the steam melting it instantly and glossing the tips of her fingers. “Actually, Moxie asked if it was okay to start working there for a few hours a week.”

Sam accepted the bite that Sara put in her mouth, catching her thumb to lick the butter off before she kissed her palm. “What did you say?”

“I told her that that was fine, but when I called Mary for the scoop, she did that sniffing thing she does and said it was nobody’s business but theirs.” Sara smiled, glancing back at their bedroom door and lowering her voice. “Secretly, I love that they’ve bonded. Mary could run a damn country, and she raised four girls, which is similar, to be fair.”

“Mary is one of the most solid people I know, so I love that idea. Besides, it’ll give her a little spending money since she won’t take any from us.”

???“I know, right?” Sara twisted her hair into a low bun, settled cross-legged on the bed, and took a leisurely sip of her coffee. “I tried again to leave some on her nightstand, and she just gave it back to me.”

“Did she say anything?” Sam reached for a strawberry from the bowl on the breakfast tray and popped it into her mouth. “And just as an aside, that kid couldn’t be more like me if I’d birthed her myself.”

Sara laughed. “She even looks a little like you. She just said that she appreciated it but that she’d find a way to earn her own.”

“I get that,” Sam said, licking strawberry jam from the silver knife, a classic move to drive Sara crazy. “But you were right when you said that when she starts high school in the fall, she’s going to need some clothes. I want to take her to Boise for a weekend, if that’s okay with you. Let her shop at all the tomboy stores you and Jennifer know nothing about.”

“Fine, but we’re coming too. If I leave you two to your own devices, she’ll come back with nothing but jeans and hoodies.”

Sam smiled and set her croissant on the tray. “Oh my sweet, sweet, femme…why would anyone need something besides jeans and hoodies?” Sam playfully pulled Sara down onto the bed and into the fluffy duvet, kissing down the slope of her neck to her shoulder. “Baby, of course you’ll be there. In fact, I’m telling her it was your idea in the first place. The thought of shopping for clothes outside of Patagonia sounds like the ninth circle of hell to me.”

Sara snuggled in closer and laid her head on Sam’s chest. The sound of her heart beating was as familiar as her own. She waited for a moment, then looked up at Sam, tucking a wild lock of hair behind her ear. “So when are you going to tell me what’s got you so worried?”
