“Everything’s good. I try to stay away from the fried stuff, but it is delicious.”
“Watching your girlish figure?” I ask, then slap my hand on my mouth. “Oops, sorry.”
He laughs and sets the menu down. “No need to apologize. I thought it was funny. And yes, I try to watch what I eat, monitoring fat, calorie, and protein intake.”
That sounds like too much work. I don’t let that come out of my mouth, though. Instead, I say, “I understand. If I don’t at least try to watch it, delicious food goes straight to my thighs and butt.”
His eyes widen and then he tries to cover a laugh with a cough, but I know better. “Well, nothing wrong with that.”
“Maybe not to you,” I say, still looking over the menu. “But I can’t afford to go buyin’ new jeans all the time.”
“Well, you look very nice in them,” he says.
I look up from my menu to see him piercing me with that intense blue stare. His eyes remind me of a clear blue Colorado sky without a cloud in sight. “Well, thank you very much.”
The server takes our orders and brings us soup and tea.
I set my teacup down and say, “Well, I’d like to hear more about your proposal, sir… Lincoln.”

I had completely forgotten about the proposal because she started talking about her thighs and ass. A very delicious ass I’d much love to take a cat-o-nine tails to until it’s a lovely shade of red.
Something tells me, though, she wouldn’t much be interested in my playroom. I try to put the thought aside until I can get to know her better and maybe start dropping hints, seeing what she liked.
Meanwhile, I better get back to business before I lose myself in thoughts of her naked and spread out before me like a gourmet buffet.
“Yes, back to that discussion. Sorry, we got a bit sidetracked there. But before that, when will we find out the results of your MRI?”
“Within twenty-four hours. They said someone’ll call me.”
I nod. “Okay. If it doesn’t happen today, will you call and let me know what they said? I mean, if you feel comfortable sharing your private medical information with me.”
She looks a little taken aback but smiles and looks down at the table. Then, she reaches across and puts her warm hand on mine. My first instinct is to pull away, as I’m not a fan of unsolicited touches, but I don’t.
Just leave it there, Linc. It’s just her way. Concentrate.
“I will tell you everything they tell me. You did pay for it, after all. Which, I will pay you back for. Even if you have to take it out of my pay.”
I’m warring inside because I want to pull my hand away, but then I don’t. If this were any other person, I’d have yanked it back immediately. But not only will that probably offend her, I also find it’s not as weird as it seems like it should be. She’s rubbing her thumb over the top of my hand now, and I try to relax. I think that’s what she’s trying to do, relax me.
“I’m not letting you pay me back. I’ve already told you this. So we won’t be discussing it again. Okay, Quinn?” I feel like that came out a little too harsh or abrasive.
Since when I do care how things come out? I’m always blunt.
She frowns a little, then recovers with a smile. Then, she pats my hand in more of a motherly way and pulls hers away. “Okay, I won’t bring it up again, but I hope you know how much I appreciate it. Not only that, but the homebuyer program and everything. You’ve really helped improve my quality of life, Linc.”
This stirs something warm and unfamiliar inside me, but I just nod. “I’m glad to do it. Good people deserve good things in life, and I can tell deep down, that you’re a good person.”
“With a felony,” she mutters under her breath.
As if my hand has a mind of its own, I reach over and grab that hand again, surprising myself. “Not your fault. You should have never been charged. You were defending yourself. In fact, if you’re interested in getting it expunged, I have a very good attorney you could talk to.”
Her eyes widen. “I can get it expunged?”
I shrug one shoulder and let go of her hand. “I have no idea about criminal cases, but I’ll have him give you a free consultation if you’d like to chat with him.”
