“Hey. I’m on my way.” I say, glancing over at Natalia who is eyeing me suspiciously.

“Is she with you?” They ask, their voice full of worry.

“Natalia is with me,” I start, but am immediately cut off.

“I don’t know how I feel about this. This could be dangerous, Declan. You’re all in danger.”

“Yeah, I know,” I go to explain but am immediately cut off again.

“You don’t understand. This could mean war. There better be a solid explanation,” they mutter, obviously scared of the outcome.

“I’ll explain later.”

“It better be a damn good one. I’ll see you soon, then.”

“Okay, bye.” Pressing the end button, I feel daggers being shot into my head from next to me. When I glance over, Natalia is glaring at me.

“Who was that?” She asks sassily, tapping her fingers on the door.

“You’ll see,” I assure her, placing my hand on her leg. “We will be there soon.”

“The last time someone made a sketchy phone call, it ended with me being tortured and drugged,” she reminds me. Crossing her arms over her chest, she looks out the window with a distant expression.

“Do you really think that I am going to torture and kill my wife? I’m not my father, you know.” I ask, raising my eyebrow. Her words are slightly prickly, doing their job to jab at me.

My words seem to have gotten her attention, because she turns to face me again. “Firstly, I know you aren’t your father. I’d have shot you on sight. Secondly, I think you’re forgetting that we are no longer married.”

“That would be true… if I had actually filed the papers instead of running them through the shredder,” I admit with a smirk. “I’ve already told you, Natalia. You are it for me. We are not getting divorced. I won’t continue to repeat myself when I say that this is death do us part.”

Her mouth falls open, and she punches my shoulder, pushing my hand off her lap. “You are such an asshole.” She turns back toward the window, and I know she’s trying to hide her smile. The reflection in the mirror gives her away, where I can see her struggling to keep her expression straight.

As we turn down the dirt road to the abandoned warehouse, I reach over and grab her hand once again. “Now, I want you to know that I’m taking a huge risk bringing you out here. This isn’t the easiest thing for any of us, but I need you to know this. Please tell me that you understand that.”

“I do, and I appreciate what you’re telling me. I just don’t understand why it’s such a big deal.” She muses, running a hand over her face with a strong exhale.

“You’ll see.” I empathize with her once more. Putting the car in park after pulling up to the warehouse, I put pressure on our combined hands with a squeeze. Eyeing the location, she wordlessly consumes the sight around her.

“This isn’t creepy at all,” she murmurs as she climbs out of the car.

I follow suit and quickly meet her at the front of the car. Stepping in front of her, I grab her shoulders to steady her. “Promise me that no matter what is inside this warehouse, you willstillcome home. It will take time until we figure out how to get you here, but promise that you will come home when this is all over. I need you to promise that you’ll come back to me.”

“As long as you’re not hiding your mistress here, then I promise,” she jokes. I pin her with a serious glare, causing her to drop her joking manner. “I promise Declan, can we go inside now? You’re starting to scare me.”

Dragging my hands down her arms, I clasp her hands before letting one fall. Using the one I still hold, I lead her up to the door. Unlocking it with a special key, we walk inside. We walk down the same path that I have traveled many times over the last eight months, turning corners and dodging line pipes.

Stopping at the familiar door, I take a deep breath. “Are you ready?” I ask her, repeating the same question Eric asked me all that time ago.

“Yes. Just open the damn door already,” she snaps, tapping her foot impatiently. I almost chuckle at her, but I realize that she’d probably kill me if I did.

I twist the knob and open the door, stepping inside. She follows close behind me with confusion clear on her face. Her eyebrows furrow on her head, and she turns to look at me for a moment.

“What is this place?” She asks, gazing around the living area. Her eyes study the room, hyper focused. She’s so busy looking around the room that she fails to notice we are no longer alone. There’s another person standing in the doorway of the bedroom, leaning against it with a smirk on their face, arms crossed over their chest

“Hello, moy malen’kiy voin,” The voice says, and she stops dead in her tracks, eyes wide.
