I feel my cheeks flush and I want nothing more than to cover myself with something but I lift my chin. “I…wonder how you think I should reply to all of that. It’s a lot to unpack.”

His head cocks and he smirks. “Take from it what you will. Just know I’m coming for you. I’m gonna take care of this guy and make sure that he knows he can’t touch what’s mine. And then I’m gonna seduce you until you’re finally mine. I’m gonna marry you and then fuck you until I have my baby planted in that belly of yours. And then I’m gonna spend the next fifty years taking care of you and spoiling the hell out of you.”

He turns to go get his phone and I take the first breath I’ve taken in the last few minutes. Victor annoyed is scary. Victor laughing is tempting and Victor vowing to win you against all odds is enough to make a woman crawl across glass to get to him. To be his.

And he knows it, damn him.

CHAPTER7

Victor

“What about this guy?” Petal glances at the guy and sighs, shaking her head. Her dark hair is hanging limply around her head and looks as dejected as she does.

I reach out and tuck her silky hair behind her ears. “Hey. Don’t worry about it. We’ll find him.”

Her shoulders slump. “I thought for sure we’d see him by now,” she mutters under her breath.

“There’s no rush. We’ll find him. And Xavier will take care of everything else until I know. Are you worried about your family?”

She shakes her head and I hate seeing her this upset. Defeated. Every time I’ve seen her up to now, she’s been so full of life even when she’s struggling to stay sane. Trying to understand something that there’s no way to understand. “I don’t have any family. My mother didn’t really know who my dad was and she died awhile ago.”

My heart sinks but I stand up and her cornflower blue eyes dart up before she looks away, her brows scrunched up. “Time to take a break. Let’s go get some clothes, baby.”

“I don’t have any money with me.”

“I didn’t ask you if you had any money. I said let’s go shopping.”

“I can’t take money from you.”

“You’re not taking money from me. You’re taking clothes.”

“Semantics.”

“Come on. The town is beautiful this time of year. They’ll be putting out all the Fourth of July stuff right now.”

I drop down and sigh. “I guess it won’t hurt. I’m already bored.”

He slams a hand into his chest right over his heart. “You wound me.”

But he grabs my clothes that he washed and dried and tosses them to me. “I wouldn’t protest you wearing my shirt into town but I think you might.”

I laugh and shake my head. “You’re starting to sound like a pervert, Vic.”

He gulps and chokes. “Vic?”

She shoots me a sparkling look. “You don’t want to hear what else I might call you.”

I lean over her and grasp her chin. “You might want to back up a little bit, baby. You don’t want me to paddle your ass for that sassy mouth of yours!”

“You know, you like to threaten me with that, but I don’t think you’ll ever touch me that way.”

I nod my head. “Keep thinking that.”

“Let’s go.”

She changes quickly and we head into town, spending the rest of the morning shopping until lunch time where we head into the diner and I buy her lunch.

While we’re eating, I feel a little icy trickle down my spine. That little warning has saved my life more than once. I casually run my eyes around the room but don’t see anything that sets off my warning senses.
