Page 10 of His Witness

My eyelids get heavy and my sigh slips into a huge yawn.

Then I drift off, his warmth searing my back through his shirt. The piney masculine scent of him surrounds me and I let the feeling of security and safety of having him with me settles me. Soothes me right off to sleep.

The dark man pulls at me and then his hands close around my throat, squeezing me until it feels like my lungs are being crushed. Nothing comes out. Not a squeak, not a sound. I claw at his big, bloody hands but they won’t loosen. I can’t move, can’t speak, can’t do anything. He’s killing me. I can feel everything fading out, feel the sensation of floating taking over my body.

Feel the pain slipping away. The life ebbing away.

“No, no, no! Stop!”There’s no way that I’m getting away this time and I groan, wrestling with him, struggling to throw him away from me, rip his arm off and run.

“Shhh. I’ve got you, little one. You’re alright. Nobody’s gonna hurt you.” Hands touch me and I growl, fighting them with every damn bit of my strength. Nobody is killing me today. I whimper and whine while I fight the strong hands.

“Petal! Hey, Petal! It’s me, come on. It’s me, Victor. I’ve got you. You’re alright. Wake up! Open your pretty blue eyes! Let me see them, baby!”

The words finally come through the whooshing in my ears and the strangled gasps from me.

I open my eyes and my arms are above my head, my hands in Victor’s strong hands. My body trapped under his and sizzling with so much tension that it feels like I could crack with it.

“Victor?” I ask, confused. I glance around the room and realize that it’s not the dirty basement and there’s no dead man’s eyes fixed on me while the killer attempts to kill me too.

He nods his head. “Now you remember what happened, Petal?”

“I think so.” He doesn’t let go of my hands and it feels like his body sinks even more into mine. “Are you going to get off of me now?”

He pretends to consider my question but the wicked smirk on his lips says that he’s enjoying himself.

“I don’t know. Do you really want me to?”

“That’s a fucking loaded question,” I mutter under my breath.

He laughs but sits up abruptly before he picks me up. I squeak when he places me on his lap so that he can look in my eyes. “Are you good, baby girl?”

“I-I think so. I’m kinda thirsty though.”

He sets me aside and then stands up. “I’ll get you some water. Stay right there.”

I nod and watch him walk out of the room, finally realizing that he’s only wearing a pair of loose gray sweats to bed. I’ve never understood the appeal of sweatpants weather but I’m really starting to get it. I can see the outline of every damn muscle and other parts and my mouth waters.

He comes back inside and hands me a cup, watching as I drink it thirstily, my cheeks flushed when I think about what he looks like right now. His arms are crossed over his chest and his amber gaze is fixed on me like a predator watching its prey. There’s a tattoo on his right shoulder and all down his arm. His skin is tanned and smooth. Slabs of muscles run down the ladder of his stomach and straight down into the v on his hips. A smattering of dark hair on his bulky chest follows the same happy trail.

His eyes dance golden when he takes the cup back from me. “You look like you’re feeling better, Petal. Do you want to go back to sleep or look at some photos to see if you can figure out who the hitman was?”

I’d really like him to throw me down on the bed and have his wicked, wicked way with me but as usual the man is all business.

“Fine,” I sigh. “Let’s look at some pictures.”

He grins. “Relax. The faster that you point me at this guy, the faster things go back to normal.”

I glance down at the bed, picking at the covers. “You mean the faster you get rid of me.”

The smile on his craggy face fades. “That is not what I mean at all. I guess I haven’t made it plain but I don’t intend on giving you up at all. You’re mine, Petal.” His eyes drift down my body and he takes a deep breath, his hands curling by his sides. He looks like his control is about to snap.

He leans over me and then his hands land on the bed beside my hips. I can feel the warmth of him over me and my head spins with desire.

“I want you, Petal. I’ve never wanted any woman like I want you. And hopefully you can get on board with that because if you don’t, I intend to make sure that you can’t get away from me until you do.” His eyes lock on my chest and his breathing speeds up. “I will do everything in my power to win you over. Right down to murder someone for you.”

“Not necessary,” I say. “I already said I don’t want anyone to kill for me.”

“Not your choice.” He grunts and stands tall. I’m gonna get those pictures pulled up on my phone and we’ll look at them. And then we can head into town and find you some clothes.” His mouth twitches. “Not that I care if you run around in my shirts. I don’t care at all. You look good in my clothes.”
