So, Luca and I were out in the cold of night and I called Ryan.

“Hi, Ryan.”

“Hello.” His voice was gruff. Not even delightful or joyous like it usually was. It was clear he was ill. I didn’t know what to say. Ryan never even said hello. All he Needed to say to greet you was his amazing singing voice. I’d liked that we were finally getting closer and this just had to happen. This sickness that turned Ryan so bleak.

“Get better soon.” That was all I could summon to say.

And then, when I was alone with Luca, we just talked.

“How about your family?” I asked him, a little direct.

“That’s pretty straightforward.”

“Yeah, just wanted to break the ice.”

“What do you mean?” He was barely looking at me.

He was so much different from Holden and I knew and I knew I was even catching feelings for him.

He said his father was rich while they were growing up, and he still was. He’d gone to Stanford and He was back at the town where he grew up because he wanted to change things.

I really felt connected to that, mostly because that’s how I felt towards my mum. I looked at him and he looked at me and for a moment, we were the only ones there. We didn’t hear the trees rustle or the birds chirp. It was just us and the night was young and the stars were struck in the skies. And then, we heard something.

* * *

Frankly,I didn’t know chickens climbed fences. It turns out one of the neighbors chickens had fallen from a fence and that’s what made the sound. Meanwhile, Luca and I ran away like scared pants. How professional! Weren’t we supposed to be the ones in charge. Like security? Watching? Guess we were just going to employ actually policemen to do that work.

Ryan came to work and started squealing

“oh my gosh, you’re dating Holden!”

He was such a blabbermouth. But he was my blabbermouth. “Shhh.”

But Luca had already heard him and called me to his office. I didn’t think he was all about that, whether he’d even be slightly concerned about that. But, then, he started telling me things about Holden I didn’t want to know. How he left and abandoned everyone for his career. And his start-up. And bow he abandoned that too.

I just didn’t want to start that with him. “I'm sorry. I don’t want to even start that with you. I don’t know why you care but I can’t talk about this.”

He was definitely surprised because he just kept staring at me, even as I strutted out his office with his ego in pants.

ChapterEleven

Iwas about to go to Ryan's desk to ask him about something before I caught myself and remembered that he still hadn't come back to work, it seemed there was something about him that kind of diffused the tension around the office never taught I'll say this but I missed him being around, I kind of expected to turn about and see him standing in a corner rubbing his hair in place, meanwhile redhead amazon was starting to show some claws since when Luca suggested I go with him for the neighborhood watch when Ryan called in sick she'd just been politely hostile anytime I passed her she just plastered on a fake smile

It didn't help that since after last night Luca had been giving me weird glances quite often although I was trying to avoid going to his office as much as possible it was inevitable because of all the work we had to do, and I now had to fill in for Ryan a bit.

Okay I was just going to go in drop this file and be out quickly
