He says and I stand to leave. I stop at his door and turn to look at him and I find him already staring at me. Those eyes, the way he looks at me, I’m they will be the death of me, I am so sure of it it’s not even funny. I turn back around and step out of his office.

My phone rings and I see that it is Stella calling. Ugh, what does she want now?

I ick the call and plaster in the fakest smile ever.

“Hey Stella, good afternoon.”

I say breezily and I can hear her smile through the phone.

“Hey Evelyn. I’m good, great actually. I heard you guys have caught the person responsible for all the attacks on the town, that’s great, that’s really great.” She sounds so enthusiastic for a second I think she really just might be a nice person.

“We are not sure yet,” I say not wanting to divulge too much information. Why didn’t she call the mayor to give him true congratulations, why is it me?

“We do have someone in police custody but he might not be the one.”

“I’msure it’s going to turn out fine Evie honey. Hey, I’m in town for the next few days, we should meet up and do that catching up we said we were going to do.”

It’s the way she said it, we should, not should we, she wasn’t asking me, she wasn’t giving me room to decline, she was telling me. I roll my eyes and smile again.

“Um sure, but today is a busy day at the office, I don’t think I can make it out before seven.”

I say hoping to dissuade her and get her off my back.

“Oh nonsense. I’m sure Luca can keep his hands to himself for two hours.” She says

What?

“Excuse me?”

She laughs and the sound grates on my nerves.

“Oh you know what I mean, he adores you so much for all that efficiency. But I’m sure he’ll be able to survive without you for a few hours. Meet me at the café down town.”

She says and ends the call. No goodbyes.

I sigh and look to Luca’s door. I make my way to his office and knock.

“Hey, sorry for the interruption. Stella’s requesting a meeting with me outside the office” I say and he cocks his brows.

“Requesting? Stella?” I see the hint of a smile on his face and I roll my eyes.

“Fine, she’s demanding for a meeting.” I say and he nods.

“Sounds more like her. How long?”

“Not long, I hope.” I say and he reclines in his chair.

“You really don’t like that woman do you?” He says and I shake my head. “Not one bit.” And, he laughs.

It’s so sudden and unexpected and beautiful, it has me rooted to a spot and before I know it there’s a foolish grin on my face too. He stops laughing and looks at me.

“I’m sure it will be fine, and you can always fake a work emergency if you need to leave. Just call me.”

I nod, still mailing as k close his door and make my way to the elevators.
