“Ma’am this is the St. McAllister hospital. Can you help us with any information?”

I scrambled about for my keys, putting on the clothes I’d worn yesterday. I almost forgot she was waiting for me to say something before I speak. “His brother is the mayor.”

* * *

I’m hereto see Holden grant.”

The nurse at the table gave me a cursory look.

“How are you related to Mr Grant?”

“He’s my boyfriend.” Before she could speak I interjected “Please just let me see him.” I say in my most pleading voice.

I’m here to see Holden grant.”

The nurse at the table gave me a cursory look.

“How are you related to Mr Grant?”

“He’s my boyfriend.” Before she could speak I interjected “Please just let me see him.” I say in my most pleading voice.

“Room 204, that way” she points to a stairway.

I climbed those steps as quickly as I could, I was practically running. I was so worried that I completely forgot to wonder why there were no elevators at the hospital. I walked briskly looking left and right at the numbers on the doors of each room till I found it, 204. The door was slightly ajar. Suddenly I was enraptured by the hospital’s smell. It was like my sense had just sprung awake to this mix of metallic, antiseptic and frayed Cotton of patient dresses. I didn’t knock before I entered. I didn’t expect him to be awake. Neither did I expect to meet anyone there.

The two look up at me, a man and a woman both well into their sixties. They were huddled together. The woman’s face was pink, she clearly had just finished wiping her face of tears with the napkin in her hand. The man looked puzzled.

“Who are you?” She asked arching her brows in question.

“I’m Evelyn Grey. A friend of Holden’s.”

“A friend huh.”

“Pleased to meet you Evelyn. We’re Holden’s parents.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize”

“It’s alright. You’re here to see Holden right?”

“Yes. I only just found out about the accident. What happened?”

“He was driving home at night when he ran into a stop sign.”

I had never felt so much guilt in my entire life. It sat there thick and heavy in my chest. Holden did not deserve this. I didn’t realize when the tears started to well up in my eyes. I couldn’t even look at him. I felt too ashamed.

“Dear child, don’t cry. Come here. Come now.” Mr Silvestri says beckoning to the space beside him on the visitors seat. I follow and plop down right beside him. I barely noticed the scowl on Mrs Grant’s face. She stood up to leave. She didn’t want Evelyn here and she didn’t hide the fact.

“I’ll be down the hall.” She say as she leaves. Shutting the door behind her.

“Don’t pay too much attention to her attitude. Come here.” He wraps an arm around my shoulder. I barely knew this man and here he was treating me like I was his own daughter. It made me cry more.

“How long has he been unconscious?” I ask

“He regained consciousness earlier but he was in some pain so the doctors gave him something to help.”

I take out a handkerchief from my purse and dry my face.

“You might just wake him up with all that ruckus.” He teases. Mr Silvestri was nothing like the man I imagined him to be. I always thought that Luca would’ve taken after him in his broodiness. Imitating the behavior he saw from his dad but here he was being so lighthearted even though his son was lying in a hospital bed.
