“How do you know him? You don’t look familiar.”

“I moved to town recently for a new job as the Mayor-aide and He helped me with some stuff.” I say. Struggling against another wave of tears.

“Then you’ve met both my sons.” He says with an air of pride.

“They may be brothers but they don’t get on so well.” I didn’t even know why I said that. Who was I to prod at family matters that didn’t concern me?

“Oh they used to.”

“Oh they used to.”

“Really?” I imagine the younger versions of Holden and Luca playing catch at their front yard.

“What happened?” I’d always thought their relationship was different because they were step brothers, not related by blood.

“It was a long time ago, right before the boys got into college. Holden fell in love with a damsel. Her name was kara. She was a sunny girl, I liked her back then for my boy, Holden. She complimented him. They had dated for over a year when Holden found Luca and Kara together. Holden was hurt. He was angry. He was all sorts of things then. He and Luca were supposed to go to the same college but Holden changed his choice last minute to a b list school that had accepted him in Virginia. Ever since then the gap between them just grew thicker and thicker.”

Oh my. Why did it seem to me that another Kara had appeared in their lives but with a different name and a different face, in person of me?

Yesterday the same cycle almost repeated itself between them.

I couldn’t even imagine how Holden must’ve felt. Luca on the other hand did such a wrong thing. It didn’t suit him at all but there could be a side to the story that only the brothers knew. Mrs Grant walks back into the room.

“Dear, the doctor says we can come back in a few hours time and if the tests results are good he’ll be discharged by evening.”

“Alright then, let’s leave him to rest.” Mr. Silvestri says getting up, straightening his shirt.

“Is she staying?” Holden’s mother asks. I felt the sting of her deference. She did not like me one bit. Maybe I could understand why.

“Yes. Evelyn can take care of him till we get back. Let’s leave the two alone for a while.” He says taking her hand and walking them both out of the room. Mr. Silvestri looks back one last time and I mouth a thank you to him which earned me a smile.

I drag one single chair close to the bed and sit.

Holden’s head was wrapped in bandages. His right eye was puffy and there was a little cut on his cheek that had also been bandaged. He looked so innocent, so helpless. And it was all my fault. His right wrist was also wrapped in bandages. I took his left hand in my hand instead.

“I’m really sorry Holden. I’msosorry.”

His palm was warm. I interlocked our fingers and laid my head at that side of the bed. I thought about what Mr Silvestri had told me about the two brothers. History could possibly be repeating itself with me this time around in the mix. I needed to avoid that as best as I possibly could. Before I knew it I fell asleep sitting there with Holden’s hand and mine still interlocked.

“Evelyn?” Holden’s voice wakes me up.

“Are you okay?” I ask

Of course he wasn’t okay. He was in this condition because of me.

“That was stupid of me to ask. I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry. I have no excuse and I’m just sorry. I miss you.” I say looking into his eyes that we’re looking away from mine.

“Evelyn?” Holden’s voice wakes me up.

“Are you okay?” I ask
