“Well, I think so…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll look out for them for you.”

“You sure that’s okay? I mean, I could have a babysitter ride up in there right now.”

“Which babysitter is going to stay for three days straight?”

“Yeah… I owe you one though.”

“Meh, let’s call it even for yelling.”

“So, you mean, I don’t have to figure out who’s trying to do all of these?”

“I mean, it’s not your job.”

“Sure,” I agreed, but deep down I still wanted to go ahead with my investigations. And I was going to. “So, when do you leave?”

He started fiddling through his phone, like he was scrolling for a number. “In two hours.”

“How is that possible? Who’s going back home to your kids?”

“Well, I’m trying to reach my mum for that, but her number is not going through.”

“You really think with all that was going on in there she would be available?”

“Well, I think so…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll look out for them for you.”

He laughed and walked away, into the darkness. And, as he did, I couldn’t think of anything else, not how tight and sexy his buttocks looked in those pant suits, or how he was finally becoming the man of my dreams and being important at the same time, or how, amidst all of the beat of the moment, I had poured my heart out to him. I had planned a perfect fundraiser, but something was just in my way. There was always something in my way.

Like I had expected,Luca's house was stunning. There were only few houses that looked so vintage yet modern. A bespangled chandelier ran from the ceiling almost descending to the ground. He had a wooden stairway that led to nowhere in the corner, but just that it curved right from the ground floor to the third where his bedroom was. It’s quite funny that I had never been here and on the first day that I was actually going to be here, that was to babysit his children. I had never thought of myself as a babysitter. I loved children. Even after my baby I lost, I’d always still hoped to give birth to children. I still wanted more of my own even though I knew how scary the process was. How you’d push and push and scream and suddenly, they’d just give you an emptied gift box telling you that your child never made it. Had it not been for my mother I know I’d have lost it there and then.

The first person I saw in the house was Bianca. She’s had a crocheted strapless top on that seemed like she just had a blanket to cover her boobs and nothing behind. I couldn’t say that though. She didn’t even look me in the eye. She was dead cold.

“Hi,” I tried to greet her and she left me with a bitter, strangling silence. I didn’t know what to say next so I just kept looking around because that was all I could do in the moment really.

When I got bored, I looked to her and asked, “What of Matteo?” But, just as she was about to leave me in a dead silence, he appeared. It was like I summoned him. And that I actually would take. He appeared with his bushy hair and huge glasses and rushed to hug me. Well, that surprised me, and Bianca, because her eyes widened all of a sudden. “At least, one person is excited to see me,” I wondered out loud and I looked to see Bianca’s reaction, and she just rolled her eyes.

“I have something to show you,” Matteo dragged me to the sofa. “Two things actually. Sit down.”

Okay, I wasn’t expecting that. I hurriedly sat down and he opened up a video on his phone. I wanted to ask how he always had these videos, but then he started talking. “Look at what I saw yesterday. That fire that was started yesterday, it wasn’t a mistake of any kind. Stella's son, Mickey, started it. Look at him with a can.”

I had not seen Mickey before, but from the video I could see his was a lanky boy with an otherwise great composure. He was very tall, too. Probably already into modelling. “Oh, wow. This is great. Can you send that to me please?”

“Already done that,” he beamed assumingly. “And I have something else actually. You know you were quite unsure whether Stella was involved in whatever was making everyone sick, well, guess what? For many years, her family's been in charge of the water supply for the entire town. Well, that’s how they get their money. But no one knows cos it’s in a pseudonym. Everyone drinks Latels water. And guess what Latels is rearranged…”
