She swallowed, seeking relief for her now-arid throat. “Nice. I’m sure she and Zack will battle for the best spot. Lucky for me, it’s a king bed.”

His jaw tightened before he turned and picked up the dog’s supplies.Crap. Was he coming inside with her? Despite her post-yoga contentment, Sophie’s entire system zipped and zapped and went haywire. When she opened the front door, he held it while she and Bailey entered the house. Her breasts brushed against his chest and arm and the heat he emanated flamed through her. She sucked in a fortifying breath, her senses clouding when his clean masculine scent filled her nostrils.

“I thought you had a plane to catch? Don’t you need to leave?” Oops, that was rude. Whatever. She was still angry with him. Wasn’t she?

“Sophie.” Nick’s voice was raspy.

She turned and he placed his hands on her shoulders, his long fingers scorching her through her thin jacket. Her nipples were hard enough to cut glass, and a spear of heat shot straight down to her center.

His emerald eyes blazed. “Are you still mad at me?”

Sophie dropped her gaze and wrestled with the overwhelming urge to climb him like a tree. “I’m not mad. I’m just––hmmm…”Dying for you to kiss me again and see if our chemistry is really that explosive.

The urge to pounce on him grew overwhelming. Maybe she was just sexually deprived. Or hadn’t she read about born-again virgin syndrome? She hadn’t slept with another man in over four years. Yes, that must be it.

Maybe she just needed to jump Nick’s bones and be done with it.

No strings.

No emotional attachment.

Just burning up those wonderful eight-hundred-count sheets.

Why was she fighting this? She was twenty-eight years old, a big girl. Having a fling might be the perfect solution to getting over Doug once and for all. Wipe the slate clean. Right now, she couldn’t find a single reason not to pounce on him.

Something inside her snapped.

Sophie reached up and wound her arms around his neck, plastering her body against his. Nick’s eyes widened a split second before she tugged his head down and kissed him, nipping his lower lip.

After a moment imitating a statue, Nick slanted his mouth across hers, deepening the kiss. His chest rumbled and his arms closed like iron bands around her. One hand slid down to her bottom and dragged her against his muscular frame. Every rock-hard inch of him.

Nick ripped his mouth away, nibbled down the side of her neck, and goosebumps erupted along her skin. When he brushed his parted lips across her collarbone, her head dropped back. He threaded one hand into her hair, holding her in place, and captured her mouth again. She melted against his hot hard body.

Bailey barked in excitement and jumped up to join in the game. They broke apart Eyes wide and wild, they stared at each other. Sophie struggled to catch her breath. Time to rein in whateverthathad been. Because she’d been ready to tear off his clothes and have her way with him on the living room rug.

Nick grinned. “So does that mean you aren’t mad at me, after all?”

Sophie struggled to slow her hammering heartbeat. What had gotten into her? She’d read about irrepressible passion in the steamy romance novels she loved to devour but assumed it was simply fiction.

Until now.

Until Nick.

“Umm, I don’t, I don’t…” She released a shaky exhale. “Wow.”

She ran her fingers through her now really messed-up hair and turned toward the living room window.

“Sophie, I hate to do this, but I have a plane to catch. Spend Friday night with me?” Nick’s crooked smile was devastating.

She retreated a step and attempted to ignore the sparks dancing along her skin. “No, I’m sorry I can’t. My friend Kelly’s coming to visit from San Diego.”

A line appeared between his brows. “Sophie…”

She clasped her hands together, squeezing them tight, safe from his lethal touch. “Now it’s my turn to apologize for kissing you. I don’t know what got into me, but it can’t happen again. I’m sorry but I can’t have any complications in my life right now.”

Because hopping into bed with him would be a mistake, chemistry or not. Her resolution not to get involved with anyone for a year was the right thing to do. The sensible path. Maybe after a cold shower or ten, she’d be able to rekindle her dedication to living like a nun.

“I don’t have time to debate, but we will see each other when I get back. And not just for me to pick up Bailey.” Nick lifted her hand to his lips and placed a searing kiss in the middle of her palm. “Sweet dreams, beautiful. Don’t miss me too much.”
