He was desperate. He didn’t just sound it, but in his eyes, there was real fear.

“It’s still you,” I whispered, my eyes darting to the door. “It’s still you.”

I ran my fingers through his thick hair and yearned to bury my face in his freshly washed mane, then have him crawl between my arms and cuddle me all night long.

He sighed with relief and wiped his eyes. There was something terrible afoot and I suddenly realised he’d been carrying it alone and it probably felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders.

I looked to the door again, my eyes darting quickly between his face and there, just in case Eric were to enter.

“He told me about the Russian, the double agent,” I said quickly. “Something about you scuppering the long game he was trying to set up.” Caelan bit his lip, angrily shaking his head. “I asked him in the beginning why he wasn’t mourning the team. It’s as if he felt nothing, Caelan. I don’t believe all he says.”

My husband nearly popped a blood vessel at the thought of Eric having orchestrated it all.

“He maintains his innocence, but…” I hastily added.

“Nae, lass. The opposite.” Caelan continued to worry his lip. “If you trust me, then play along tonight. Let me show you who he really is.”

“What is it he’s done, Callie?”

Before he could respond, Eric entered the room and narrowed his eyes at the sight of us conspiring. Caelan quickly covered for me, winking and stroking my arm.

“She says you’ve taken really good care of her while I’ve been gone.”

“He has,” I said grinning.

“She’s been telling me about her fantasies of two men,” said Eric, cutting to the chase.

I saw Caelan had anticipated this; it’s what the whole thing had been leading up to.

“Aye, my whore, she is,” said Caelan, his gaze fixed on me as he said it. “I always suspected she was a dark horse. With dark desires.”

“She’s had me doing all sorts to her,” said Eric, and the acting it took for Caelan to remain impenetrable wasn’t lost on me as I stared into those hazel depths of his, any fury he might have felt buried deep down. “I’m not too big to do her behind.”

I kept his gaze and he didn’t twitch or grimace, but kept still, perhaps imagining what he was hearing was not really true.

“Aye, I’m no small man,” said Caelan, searching my eyes. I tried to tell him with my stare that it was sex, just sex. I’d realised it since Eric’s comment the other day about this being about the three of us. Not me and Eric. Not Callie and me. Not Callie and Eric. But the three of us. This was always how he’d planned to get to Caelan; the only way in fact.

“I like it but as we all know, Callie is too big for my dark territory.”

“It shocked me when she first told me that you let her call you that,” said Eric, who was now circling the tub in the centre of the room, the proverbial vulture.

“How so?” asked Caelan, his restraint showing no bounds.

“We’ve never had pet names,” said Eric, and as I kept my husband’s gaze, I saw then a slight fracture in that wall of steel. “We all had nicknames in the squadron, but he would never be called anything but Boss.”

“Caelan and I are partners, he’s not my commander,” I stated, and I looked up, eyeing Eric closely. I saw my words had driven home my point. He looked shaken. “Caelan was reinforcing boundaries as your leader while allowing his team to bond. It was nothing personal Callie, right?”

“Nothing personal,” he repeated, still having to work to keep his anger battened down.

“She likes it hard up the bum,” said Eric, obviously baiting Caelan, “but gentle in her pussy. I came in there a few times these past few days. But she says it’s unlikely to result in pregnancy. Her periods haven’t come back yet.”

I’d been planning to start weaning Logan off, but I feared that would mean another baby if I did. Contraception didn’t seem to be my strong point.

Caelan saw me gazing at him and seemed to come to some realisation. “She’s a whore and needs us both, it seems.”

“She came one time at the thought of us both touching her. Simultaneously.”

Instead of looking horrified that time, Caelan looked pleasantly surprised as Eric remained stood behind him. Therefore, Eric didn’t see that gleeful look in my husband’s eyes that said he was well on the way to catching his latest prey.
