“The triple antibiotic is missing,” Genie said.

“It’s upstairs in my bathroom,” Becca told her.

While Genie ran to get the cream, Cameron eased the towel from her arm. “I’m sorry about this.”

“Don’t be sorry. There wasn’t anything you could have done.”

“I updated the security before you got here, but obviously not enough. You and this entire team are my responsibility.”

“Emerich is a ghost. He hasn’t shown his face in a year or more. There was no way for any of us to guess he was back.”

Cameron shook his head. “Except he’s been leaving you gifts.”

Becca took his hand. “We don’t know it’s him. Either way, I should have told you. I’m sorry.”

Their eyes met again and for a second she felt a wave of his fear, his guilt, and a surge of shame filled her. She shouldn’t have kept that from him.

“I won’t keep anything from you again. I swear.”

“I’d appreciate that. But can I ask, why did you?” His eyes, pooling with the need to know, made her feel even worse.

Why did she? “The truth?” She owed him that much.

“Please.”

“Emerich is my mess. I let him into our lives. I gave him access. I created the monster he is today, and he’s my monster to kill.”

He took her hand in his. “His father, Tom Garrison, along with yours, created him when they formed the CTA and started all their experiments. He was already a monster before you met him. He sought you out. For all you know, his father made sure he was in the same school as you. Made sure the two of you would meet.”

She shook her head. “His father was already dead by then, killed by mine.”

“In an accident.”

“Maybe. But he didn’t see it that way. No, if he was there to find me, he did it on his own.” Which terrified her even more.

He squeezed his hand. “If you trust me, I won’t let anything happen to you. Do you trust me?”

She fell once more into his warm gaze and felt his tenderness for her washing over her. Marcie was right. He was attracted to her. She could feel it in his warmth toward her, his compassion, his interest. She was an enigma to him, a puzzle he couldn’t figure out.

Would she let him in and risk the best thing that had happened to her in a long time? Risk the family she had finally been able to piece back together? A job that doesn’t run from her abilities, but thrives on it?

Should she?

Genie returned with the triple antibiotic cream and handed it to Cameron. “Found it.”

“Thanks.” Cameron took the cream and the moment between them was lost.

Jayne came running into the room. “I found her.”

“Who?” Cameron asked.

“Debi frequents a bar in a small town on the outskirts of Portland. She likes to play darts there. If we leave now, we can be there in time for happy hour.”

She looked at Cameron bandaging Becca’s arm. “Are you guys game?”

Becca grinned. “To keep another girl from Emerich’s clutches? You bet.”
